Like you say, Jokerman, the original films had soul. This can't have been an accident can it?
I was thinking about this the other day. I saw the awful awful awful Clash of the Titans remake nonsense (in 2D, thank God) and it got me thinking about why the original was far superior.
The conclusion I've come to is this - with the older tech you had to make the film
good as well as doing fancy effects because the effects weren't that fancy. Original CotT has a very convoluted plot but it hung together pretty well and then had some questing and effects thrown at it. New CotT has a ton of effects with a rubbish and weak plot, that really doesn't make sense at the end
either!, thrown at at.
I think Lucas had to try hard the first time around. This time it was a by the numbers "lets cram all the flash we can in" affair, and I think this is what happens these days. There is another remake I saw recently that suffered the same crap reinterpretation/flashiness of fail. I forget what. Perhaps I successfully purged it.
Anyways, get read for more. Lots more. :(

The difference is that, back then, Lucas was willing to accept criticism. Much of what made Star Wars so great was done
in spite of Lucas. The man had (
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Brian_De_Palma) Brian De Palma giving him advice and Academy Award-winning editor Marcia Lucas (his wife at the time) doing the editing.

Back then Lucas most likely didn't have a choice other than listening to criticism. My main impression from watching the RotS making-ofs was that Lucas' voice is basically the Voice of God to his team, and whatever he says must be fried gold. When, let's face it, the guy shouldn't be allowed to write scripts or direct. There's a reason why ESB is the best of the movies.

You need to leave the trolling business to the pros- like dethtoll
It's not trolling when I tell folks like you exactly what's wrong with you, handsniffer.

But it is when you intentionally disrupt a thread that was finally starting to get back on track.

I have faith that our discussion of the lackluster new Star Wars trilogy can survive dethtoll addressing an instance of unprovoked namecalling.

And Jokerman, wow, I'd have said you have an almost admirable flair for tortuous humour-vivisection, if it wasn't already dead. The commentary's great; his schtick is just shit.
And I haven't even touched on the all deconstructing the trashy movies of an ex-favorite director vs. taking your ex-wife apart and stuffing her limbs in trash bags angle.
;)

Oh, I'm so sorry- I didn't mean to slander, nor hurt your feelings. I only relied on someone who seemed to know his way around here, but I guess he was just being a dick:

how familiar are people generally with the concept of "indiscriminate"
because I'm real good with it
