First person exploration games?
Thirith on 20/8/2017 at 17:18
After I finished Edith Finch this afternoon (and my opinion hasn't changed - several fantastic individual parts, even if it doesn't quite add up), I very briefly got started on Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I'd heard good things about the binaural sound, so at first I was a bit disappointed - until I remembered that my soundcard enhances positional audio, which works well enough in most games, but with this particular recording technique anything other than regular stereo actually takes away from the experience, as it's designed to work with a stereo setup. I'd very much recommend that people play this with good headphones and not speakers, because the binaural audio is quite something. In my first few minutes, I ended up looking over my shoulder - not Senua's, but my actual shoulder - because the sound so convincingly fooled me into thinking there was someone there, someone not altogether friendly.

As far as the genre name is concerned, I'm not too hung up about this. To some extent I use the label "walking simulator" to reclaim it from those who use it as glib criticism.
Yup, same.

ITT: People who don't play walking simulators try to find an acceptable new terminology for the genre, while people who
do play them embrace the term.
At any rate, it's better than the discussions about immersive sims. Wait...
Are walking simulators immersive sims? Oh no! I've opened the gates! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

That's kinda how a lot of things go these days. People not directly involved try to find an acceptable term for something, while those directly involved don't really care that others think the term might be considered offensive to them.

But it often isn't conventionally fun. It grows into a harrowing experience.
I really want to play it given the subject it's focused on, but it would likey be a bad idea given my current situation.

Hey, I like walking simulators and I definitely play them. I just happen to think that FPX games is a better term for it.

Immersive sims are just a subgenre of walking simulators, really.

I play these games a lot, and I don't like that term, because I like clear definitions, and this isn't one. I'm not going to argue with the usus either, that's how people decided to use it. At least the term "notgames" is used less and less frequently, and that was even more ridiculous case.

Not all walking sims are first person tho. The Path and Passage for instance. What do we call them then? "Experience games"? Actually, that's not bad. I've also heard "Narrative games" suggested for the genre. Anyway, for better or worse, walking sims is what everyone knows the genre as and at this point it'd take something big to get the entire gaming community and press to agree on a new term.

Walking isn't a specific feature or difference that would make this genre stand out from others. Also, this was originally used in derogatory, dismissive context, AFAIR. It isn't now, which is good, but that doesn't make it a great term either ;)

Hold the phone. First, what do we call ourselves? I disagree with 'pedants', because we're clearly most concerned with genre, not the universe at large. Pigeonhole bandits? Epigenretologists? Classificants?
NV: you've piqued my interest with Div2. I'll bump it up on my backlog priority list.
