As one Ashlander said, "There's no greater feeling than striking down a cliff racer with a single arrow." And lemme tell you, he was right.
Having become the savior of all Vvardenfell and thoroughly handing it to Dagoth Ur and his mask wearing ass, I was on the lookout for something new. Blizzard, my Daedric Dai-Katana with 40-90 ice damage, and Nerevar's Judgement, my Daedric Claymore with 40-85 shock damage, were actually getting old. So I started anew with a Bosmer named Reinhart, class Ranger. Specialization stealth, unarmored, marksmanship, spear for swimming, sneak, athletics, acrobatics and the standard (for me, at least) security, alchemy, mecantile, and speechcraft. Having to buy no armor made getting started a lot easier. I bought a chitin shortbow and a few hundred arrows and set off on my quest (it's easy being a Ranger, I just follow my nose around and shoot stuff). Striking my first mudcrab from on top of a rock from about 100 yards away was the best new thing I'd experienced since stepping off of that prison ship the first time.
Sadly, Reinhart found his way to Sadrith Mora because he needed to restock(I walk everywhere) and the local thieves guild piqued his interest. He's now a full blown criminal...but the Morag Tong is calling his name, so he's begun to poke around Vivec, trying to find the guildmaster.
Anywho, the point of the thread is, marksmanship rocks. No real need for armor, just hop up onto the nearest elevated area and fire away.
Indeed.

Funny thing is, the first time I ever played the game I had marksmanship as a minor skill. After restarting, marksmanship became a major skill.
Underappreciated? Not by me. :)

I love my bow and arrow. It's my most frequently-used weapon, especially since I got my hands on a daedric longbow. There is, as you say, an indescribable pleasure when you twang that bow and drop some distant enemy before they're even aware of your presence. I play in third person mode and I've practiced marksmanship till I can waste a cliff racer only just on the borders of visibility :)

I never saw the value of Marksmanship until I got Tribunal. How misguided I was. A certain item (several of them, actually) that I managed to get my hands on were so deadly, yet so valuable and rare, that I immediately decided I had to get to be a Master Marksman, lest I not misfire even one of my newfound pretties.
You walk EVERYWHERE?! Holy crap that would get old fast for me. Every time I start a character, before I find the Amulets of Divine Intervention and Amuslrisjazij's Whatever, I get grumbly when I have to walk from Balmora to Monmouth Fort. After I get those amulets, I only set foot in the hinterlands when I absolutely positively have to. It's all Striders, Guild Guides, Temples warps and Shrine warps.

Personally, I was rather disappointed by the lack of enchanted bows and the relative scarcity of enchanted arrows.:( While daedric longbows rock and you can get that enchanted bow from the ashlander burial caves, I can't seem to find any other nice bows/crossbows. Am I missing some really neat weaponry or is there just not that much out there? Also, considering how fast I can go through my arrow supply, I wish there were a lot more enchanted arrows to buy/find. When I do find good arrows, I feel like I can never shoot them because I swear everytime I miss!:p
Even so, I always carry around a long range weapon to pick off those dern cliff racers before they know I'm there:thumb: A bow is work its weight for that purpose alone!

Yeah, bow is good. My first char that I did had marksman 60 before I restarted. Then I picked hammer and longsword. I miss my daedric bow. it felt great to kill cliff racer even before I was able to see 'em clearly. (my view is max) I almoust like followed my ears to pick my target and rarely missed.
I'm quit sure that my next char will be pure ranger.

I've two chars going--a khajiit theif/assassin named Zared, who's done with the main quest and is level 65 or so (not topped out yet, though) and a nord warrior named Fjeldara who is a measly level 4 but rising fast.
Zared is very good with her bow, though I LONG ago quit carrying around a daedric bow in favor of the bound variety. Being a khajiit theif, agility and jumping are important, and real weapons, once your conjuration is up to par, are just not worth it. As for arrows, yeah, I go through 'em like crazy. Pick up all the ones I find, I don't care any longer if they're good or not, as I can kill most NPCs with only 1 silver. (Marksman 110 with bound). Now, since I'm not carrying weapons, and I wear only light armor, I only have generally around 200 lbs out of a possible 640.....agility is 120, plus I have an extra 3 points of jump from my glass tower 'Frog Shield--Look! It's Green!'. When I cast a 20-pt hoptoad on myself, I can ALMOST make it from the top of the arena over to the temple (clearing St Delyn or St Olms, whichever it is on that side) in one jump. Now THAT'S fun, and well worth relying on weightless bound weapons!

i used to be the same, zaphod. but i just listen to the beautiful music, shoot down the various creatures i come across, and live off the land. it's actually quite nice. kinda like everquest without any annoying people (or any, for that manner).

I'm an assassin. Never have I gone out without my daedric friend (or bow of shadows) :) It's almost become a part of my body :joke: Apart from striking down your victim at long distance there is nothing like releasing a poisoned arrow while disguised with a chameleon spell and watching your target running around in panic and trying to find you before losing breath :ebil:

As for the rest...well you have to enchant them (bows and crossbows) on your own (alone or with help of Mages guild).
Arrows :) Yes... If it wasn't for an official mod I would probably have no magic arrows now.
Simply download and install the official "area effect arrows" mod and visit Aradraen: Fletcher in Foreign Quarter in Vivec. Satisfatcion guaranteed :cheeky:
