Lossless SS2 OST sometime?
Bjossi on 13/5/2007 at 20:18
A stupid question, but what does OST stand for? :o
Valet2 on 13/5/2007 at 20:20
"OST stands for Official or Original Soundtrack. The term can be used to describe the musical soundtrack sold for any movie, TV series, or video game, but it is most often used in reference to anime and video game soundtracks"

Ah, thanks for explaining.
Lossless OST you say? Wouldn't the guy that ripped the songs in 320k just have to rip it again in 16 or 24bit flac files?
Valet2 on 13/5/2007 at 20:45
Yes, rip again without converting into mp3, wma or sh*t like that.

Lately I had a chat with Schattentänzer. He came up with the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113842) idea he also presented here, to make a high quality version of the Shock2 ingame songs. We soon came to the question of how to best distribute the mod which would presumably get quite big.
I had the idea to encode the files as high quality OGGs and let the users automatically decode them in the same fashion HOTU does for SS2's sounds.
But with the source material already being lossy MP3s we quickly discarded that idea as the overall quality loss would be too much.
Maybe this sheds a light on why some of us here have asked for a lossless version. Anyone who wants to remix the songs or use them in a fan mission or use samples from it will face the same problem. Finally it's not unlikely that MP3 as a codec becomes obsolete. For many people it already is as OGG is a superior free codec.
None of these are severe problems. And don't get me wrong, it's fantastic that we got a
better version of the SS2 soundtrack after all this time.
But then it would cost MysteryDev only a few minutes to give us the
best possible version and thereby avoid any potential future problems once and for all.

A few minutes not counting the time it takes to upload the 700+ MBs archive with the lossless files. :erm:

Actually, only about 200MB if encoded with FLAC.
