The NNP... - by Bakerman

How did people approach the final 'level' in SoC?
I approached the NNP without really knowing what I was in for. I was carrying a GP 37, Spas-12, and an SVDm2 (with 4 rounds :p). A couple of grenades as well. Two stamina artifacts (never worry about stamina unless I'm overweight), bleeding, health, and something else :p.
I found it ridiculously tough. I usually try to take out the snipers dotted around the entrance to get some rounds for the SVD, but the choppers and enemies pushing in from the rear mean I try to push forward with the GP rather than taking my time and using the sniper.
After dying a ton, usually after running thorugh the gate and inside one of the rail cars to avoid the choppers, I eventually just sprinted hell-for-leather towards the entrance, weathered incoming fire from the stupid amount of Monolith soldiers loitering around it, popped medkits, and hid around a corner to take out the ones that followed me inside.
Really, really messy, and it made me feel like a cheater :p. And this was only on Stalker difficulty! How did you guys approach this level?

What I usually do is to hide somewhere and let the soldiers behind me pass me - this way they'll clear the gate of monolith troops. Then I run in after them, and stay close to the wall of the reactor (on the right), and run towards the entrance. I only have to engage a few troops on the way, since most of them are out in the open, or on the other side of the tracks. Still have to use a few medkits though. I think you should just get through this part without wasting too much resources, and forget about it. :)

Heh, 'without wasting too many resources' is a key point :p. I got into the reactor with almost no ammo for my GP, so I had to work with the Tunders that most of the Monoliths drop. But I managed to get through and got... the bad ending :p. I'm glad that I'm going to replay this game soon, because I'd be very disappointed if this were it. Though the final cinematic was very brilliant, it wasn't exactly satisfying :p.

Well, you only get the 'bad ending' if you want to. You can always go for the true ending (as long as you got the decoder from the hotel), which is always good.
My approach to the NPP is also to let the soldiers go first, then hug the right side and try to stop as little as possible on the way to the entrance.

I was quite confused on where to go, there was a timer, and I kept dying to what seemed like insta-kill helicopters. So eventually I just put on stamina artifacts, hugged the wall and sprinted to the entrance. Not very subtle, but at that point I really didn't give that much of a damn. I wanted to finish the game quickly and get some mods on.

Those helicopters are pests. There are a bunch of Monolith hanging around with RPGs - anyone know if it's possible to actually take the helis out?

Eh... I did the only thing I thought I could do. What is this decoder of which you speak? Actually, never mind, I'll try and find it myself next time I play through.

If you follow the Strelok main story line, you'll be able to get a decoder in Pripyat, which will allow access to a secret lab, and will let you play a bit further, getting to the good ending when you finish. All the Wish Granter endings are bad.
And yes, it is possible to bring the helis down, altjough difficult. I always spend the whole game collecting RPGs, so that I can take them to the NPP and try to get the helicopters.

I just run like hell to the entrance. Military armor and stamina artifacts are useful here, then once inside it is a good idea to use anti-rad artifacts, and lots of them.

I never found radiation to be a problem - I did have a single Urchin, though, which I think was pretty good in that regard. I played throu most of the game with a pretty fixed artefact lineup :p.

I did what I was told to do :p. It may have been that I hadn't patched the game, though. I was never told to find Guide, which I think was critical to the story (so someone told me). Anyway, next playthrough I intend to do it 'proper'.

If you drop a gauss gun while facing the secret door you need the codes for, it causes collision problems that force the door open, which might save you some time.
Think it has to be a gauss gun, and has to be at a certain spot (there's a movie of it on youtube though, if you need reference).
And yes, shameless cheating, but hey.
