standalone installer is indeed, probably the most outdated/worst way of installing Thief right now (unless they updated it in the meantime). anyway, as long as you have some kind of Thief install which has the crf files (and a thief.exe, that's used to check for a valid install), the patcher should be able to crunch through it.

I'm just curious, does the GOG build address the following in any new way? Or is it the same as installing TFix over a 1.0 disc install of Thief Gold?
- high frame rates affecting physics
- Open AL & EAX

I really didn't notice anything specific, but for other games with modern multi cores makes bodies bounce far away on other games (assassins creed one for instance is very noticeable).

This new update must be the reason why my copy of Thief Gold from GOG is all messed up now, I didn't even choose to download it or anything it seems to have done it automatically and now it doesn't load into FMsel and it isn't full screen which I assume means TFIX has been erased or something.
It asks me if I want to play Dark Project or Gold, which is pointless: Thief Gold IS Thief the Dark Project but with a few teaks, so do I want to play a slightly worse version of the same game without fan missions? No thanks.
Now I'm going to have to reinstall TFIX and FMSEL and all that stuff, which sucks because I don't even remember how to do it other than deleting a semi colon from a notepad doc to trick it into booting into FMSEL.

well.. this is how steam and galaxy (or any other client that manages your games for you, for that matter) work, all your manual or 3rdparty edits are erased when they push an update. this is by design.

I dislike the texture changes in Gold's Bonehoard and its inclusion of the fireshadow. More significantly the vibe of the Lost City is negatively impacted by the inclusion of the Mages, so being able to choose to play the Dark Project is neat (Also the level progression is probably better without the extra Gold levels for someone playing it for the first time).

I don't like the extra 3 missions in Gold, especially Thieves' Guild which is an annoying maze. I have been trying to get hold of The Dark Project for many many years and finally I can have it and legally.

On the mission objectives page, I added the following text at the beginning: “This mission is an annoying maze.” Now I can play with a better understanding of what lies ahead throughout the mission.
