As far as falling off beams in Deadly goes, yeah, if you take your sweet time and move carefully, yes, you can avoid falling off a damn beam. Hence the facepalm. Try making a fast move on that same beam when you suddenly have to move quick.
Ok, let me restate that. The process required to move about on a beam is entirely in tune with the feeling of being a thief and sneaking carefully through a house.
Not being able to make any sudden moves when up high balancing on a narrow beam is arguably a good thing.

I suppose so, especially in a game where free form exploration had its wings clipped right off. It suited Deadly very well.
Take the movement controls from Deadly and transplant them into Dark Project, then tell me what a classic the game was...

The worst thing about the movement in T3 in my opinion is walking. It feels like you're stuck in mud or something. I couldn't even stand to play it before installing the Minimalist patch.
That being said, the mantling is noticeably better than in the other games.

As I said, I don't feel like defending the movement in general ... :p

I understand. :p
As for me, I apologize, Im pretty sure that I am still just in some form of shock/denial over the Thief 4 debacle.

Many of us are :nono:

No need to apologize, GD, we're all little sh**s in here. :p
(And for the record I didn't take anything you said as an insult. In fact, compared to the way this thread started, I'm extremely happy with the course it's taken!)

And seriously ... the Ocean House? That place that literally has no sense danger whatsoever by the time you're about half-way through?
Oh no! Don't hit me with that small vase!Ok, I exaggerate. Even nowadays I'm happy when I leave the Ocean House. But it's the very epitome of exactly what you're complaining about in the Cradle. Great design, but you soon learn (around the time you exit the basement on your first playthrough in my case) that if you pay even the slightest bit of attention you won't come to any harm. It's just a matter of taking it slow and looking around.
As I said, it was better at maintaining the illusion, I didn't say it was dangerous. The really effective horror is not about scaring the players, it's about giving them the tools to scare themselves. Ocean House manages to make playing as a powerful vampire scary and that's a bloody impressive feat.

RttHC did basically the same thing, yeah ... but puppets are more predictable in comparison? That's interesting ... I would have said exactly the opposite. One of the great things about the puppets is the way they behave a bit randomly, keeping you on your toes.
Well, I thought they had fairly predictable patrol patterns. Especially compared to St Yora's and its multiple zombies.

The game's been available for pre-order for awhile, and we're still not hearing any 'Thief 4 smashes pre-order estimates!' stories from the press. If it was poised to be a runaway success, believe me, Squeenix would be shouting its pre-order numbers from the mountaintops.
The marketing campaign is not in full swing yet, though, is it?

I dunno, personally I find the Ocean House to be overrated.
Yes, it's scary at first. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how powerful you are, you'll still be afraid of the unknown.
I personally thought that it failed to maintain that "dread of what might happen", which is the main sort of fear offered by all the levels we are discussing. For me it didn't hold a candle to the Cradle or RttHC, where I was afraid to progress at many completely unscripted moments right throughout the level.
EDIT: I should say that I still think very highly of the Ocean House, I just don't find it in the same league as the Cradle and RttHC, which are the favorite levels of my favorite games.

I wasn't comparing them level to level, though. Just with the opening part of the Cradle.
Another thing is that the player is ostensibly being trapped in the Cradle, but it doesn't work very well, since the player came there to investigate. It works much better in RttC, where the player wants to escape with the Eye.
