Hello, Dudelings.
I have a riddle for thee, my little ones. If t'were by happenstance that one certain fellow be downloading the 1.2 patch who was yet to journey right the way though The Mod Who Shall Not Be Named yet, having only just traversed the racing steel worm that burrows between the districts to the the lower socio-economic variant, and that fellow was loathe to lose his magical saving crystals, and this fellow had also taken but a gander at the Hallowed Tome of Changes accompanying the 1.2 patch, he would be thrilled to discover his saves would indeed be safe! However, this young lad's delight might be given pause, if he happened to notice the quiet yet foreboding warning accompanying this grand development, that follows... "we strongly recommend that you start a new game or apply the patch when you're about to enter DXI, leave DXI, enter ABI, or leave ABI – just to be safe."
So, my Little Goslings, might you alay this poor leper's fears, and enlighten this mind that pulsates with the rhythm of a Cerebrate, who's texture would match a sponge if that was the appropriate physical property necessary to absorb and digest the words you may spill forth, about what exactly DXI and ABI are, and whether they're spoilerific? And if they are, can you tell me without spoiling too much? I'm pretty sure I haven't gone past them, but if I have, it's because I was just testing you.

Oh god kill it with fire.

Hay, that's not very nice.
You made me feel very small.
Besides, there's a lightbulb over my post, so it must mean I'm very clever.

But seriously, ""we strongly recommend that you start a new game or apply the patch when you're about to enter DXI, leave DXI, enter ABI, or leave ABI - just to be safe." What's AVI and DXI? I'm just not that far in and I don't want to fuck up my game. I get lots of CTD's and lots of graphic corruption, and I'm hoping this will help a little bit.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't know this forum doesn't merge double posts.

Well they're two missions in the game so it's a bit spoilerish. DXI takes place in the middle of the game, and ABI takes place right before the last mission.

Ah, thank you. Much appreciated. I guess I'm looking more flammable with each passing second to Zylon. =]

Essentially, a new "mission" clears all your previous map data: as an example, in original DX, anything you do on liberty island is persistent within that mission, so dropping a gepgun on the floor outside unatco HQ, entering the HQ map, and then running back outside, will present you with a gepgun still waiting there. The game saves the state of liberty island while you're in the HQ (and vice versa).
Once you take the boat to battery park, all that data is cleared, because you're not going back there: you're onto mission 2.
TNM has huge missions, the entire first day (up until you go to the ruins of DXI) is one mission, so all those maps are all saved, all the time. This means if you patch it midway through, any data saved in ANY of those maps that is incompatible with the newly patched code will cause your game to fuck up. Waiting until you're just about to traverse to a new mission, patching and then traversing, means all that possibly borked map data is cleared, and the new mission will have all the new patched data and thus be fine.
It's basically a case of "the patch might fuck stuff up, so here's how to minimise that risk".

That makes a lot more sense, then. I have a good amount of stuff stashed in various places, so thanks for the heads up.

I think you are not. This mod offers a really good experience and i really like it, however it has quite a few things that i would like to criticize. Notably one mission and the overall level design. The levels are usually too wide for the 'content' they have, so they feel a bit empty and waste in the same time and it makes navigation harder for the first time. Navigation isn't helped with obvious signs neither and that could make the things worse, but it didn't caused a problem for me.
Yeah I see what you're saying. I think it was the sheer scale of that first map that was throwing me off - I was surprised by just how big it was and kind of just figured the corporate district might've been on the other side or something.

Jonas commented elsewhere that one of the benefits of doing something that doesn't need to make money is that you can expect the best of your players. So when they say go to another district, and they say, "Here's the deal: To leave this district, you have to use the subway," they can feel free to assume that you will put the two together and realize that getting to the other district meant using the subway.
Commercial games tend to assume the worst of their players, which means they design with the lowest common denominator in mind. Unless you are the lowest common denominator (which I doubt you are) you should be able to play most games without paying that much attention. The Nameless Mod expects more of you than that.
I understand where you're coming from, chris. I can't remember off-hand now, but if the hint was really to the effect of "Here's the deal: To leave this district, you have to use the subway" as you suggest, then I'm really shocked at myself that I didn't pick up on it. To be honest I probably just wasn't paying as much attention to the dialogue as I should've been.
Well in any case, I'm finally in the corporate district now, so all is well. For now... :p

That was a direct quote. It was from the PM (infolink message) where you were given the goal of getting a subway pass.
You shouldn't be shocked at yourself though. I really think that commercial games set players up to skim. For reasons that should be at least somewhat obvious.
