You can gain the highest ranks in almost every faction without any special sacrifice or devotion, and you can keep that rank even if you don't interact with other members for years. The only reason to gain rank in a faction is to get better reactions from people, a few special items and access to a few people's services (talking non-rp here). There is no "real" involvement with the factions once you have reached the highest rank, but then again that would likely be a quite different game.

As to a better way to rig it, an easy way would be to make a 'Imperial Cult priesthood' faction and give it a highly positive 'reaction' to the 'Imperial Cult' faction; that way, there'd be an implicit looking-down-the-nose at laypeople until they get to a certain rank, instead of the existing "getting goo-goo eyed at the player once they get Disciple rank" (most Cult members being ranked as Adept at best). That, or do like the Ashlanders do and make it impossible to go higher than a certain rank.
Or simply remove that rank entirely and just change what she tells you, far simpler IMO. Everyone in a faction swoons over you when you get to the middle ranks in that faction that's the way they have been designed. While I would like a more individual reaction from people it's easy to see that it would take a lot of work to accomplish. It does make sense not to have more than a few people at the highest ranks but advancement is a bit too easy for the player with very little competition to get to the highest ranks.
I can also only think of two npcs that gain rank during the entire game : Ajira and Fast Eddie (Galbedir is already at journeyman rank when the game starts). That makes the game seem a bit static to me, but I can understand why they wouldn't want to script some rank increases for all those npcs.
Hmm... lots of buts and ifs up there. Have to cut down on those in the future ;):cheeky:

I was a bit surprised too that there are few consequences to rank. For example, I would expect that as I move up in the Thieves Guild, my faction with Comonna Tong members would continue to drop. I would expect that it would eventually reach the point where they would start attacking me on site (or at least they would try to sneak up behind me and slip a dagger between my ribs.) :erm: So far none of that seems to have happened. The Comonna Tong members on top of the Council Club in Balmora seem to feel the same about me now that I'm a Bandit as they did when I didn't even belong to the Thieves Guild.
Anybody notice a difference in treatment from rival factions as they gain rank?

I can assure you that if two different guilds hate each other you'll know about it when you speak to them and their disposition. A good example of this is the Telvanni and the mages guild; being a high ranking member of the telvanni means all the mages guild hate my guts and i can't even use the guild guides without bribing them.
Perhaps you haven't advanced enough in the thieves guild to see any noticable difference?
