Solitary animals really don't need this level of mental sophistication. A lone hunter can get by with a fairly simple categorization of "internal" and "external" stimuli and the occasional brush with its own species can be fairly easily mediated by basic sensory signals such as scent. A tiger doesn't really need a mental model of tiger behavior, identity, or personality in order to maintain its territory and boink the occasional female. A wolf, however, does if it doesn't want to get on the bad side of the pack Alpha.
Just to make it clear, while I am a cat person, I've met many dogs that I've liked.
Cats can be more sociable than people tend to give them credit for, although obviously domesticated animals aren't the best example as domestication reduces brain size and encourages juvenile behaviour. Feral cats often live in groups with a definte pecking order, and certainly a number of cats in the same house have complex interactions and relationships. I've also read about a cat and a dog in the same household who seemed to help each out- the cat would knock treats off shelves for the dog while the dog kept the garden clear of other cats.
These things are not as clear cut as we tend to think, but then we can't help but judge these things by comparing them with ourselves.

Hey, go for it. We can have Lesmahagowtaffer, Crianlarichtaffer. The list goes on. Oh, and Pavlovscat's right about Islay. Only he should go himself - I worked there for a while, and the locals were thrusting that gorgeous stuff at me at every turn. Great place.... as far as I remember. Oh, and the swimming pool is heated by excess stream from the distillery. how cool is that ? :thumb:

That sounds heavenly! BTW-I'm a she. I just happen to have a few masculine habits: Scotch, cigars, football. Anyway, I would love to see what I have heard is an absolutely gorgeous landscape. I've often wondered, can you smell the peat in the air like you can smell the chocolate in Hershey, PA?

I completely made up my nick a long time ago (just some random sounds that created a unique name- nothing more), but years later I was told it meant "victorious female" or "her victory".
sieg = victory (german)
ella = she/her (spanish) / is also a feminine name
Victorious over what? I have no idea :weird:, but still I think it's cool. :cheeky:
