but the smaller amount of buttons would make having fewer aug-slots seem like a better idea
That's not a better idea at all. There is nothing in the slightest bit complex about scrolling through 9 augs using a controller that is suddenly made simple by only needing to scroll through 6. It's like taking a really simple thing, and keeping it pretty much the same. If anyone at IS thought that, then I can honestly say they are a bunch of morons who shouldn't be making games.
Having more buttons to utilise isn't automatically better. With a console controller, your hands are always on the controls, but in PC games it's often necessary to move your hands to access functions out of reach. I never use the number keys to select weapons, as using the mousewheel is faster. If I could hold down the alt key and scroll though the augs, that would be much a more efficient way of selecting augs, because it means I don't need to take my hands off the controls (mouse + WASD and surrounding keys), and it would be done with two buttons instead of nine.

IW has 5 aug slots: Eye, Cranial, Arm, Leg and Skeletal. I don't think I've ever used the mouse-wheel while playing a game, and I would hate to have to scroll through a bunch of stuff while I was playing. If I had too, going through 9 would take longer and be more annoying than 5. PC games use hotkeys because people prefer to use them. If Halo hadn't been designed for XBox, I don't think they would have used that two-weapons-at-a-time system. I play less FPSs than most, but all the ones I've played on a PC use the top row of numbers to select weapons.

Half Life (a PC game) used the 2(or sometimes 3) weapons at a time system long before Halo did.

It's strange that you are trying to argue the limitation of console controls when you don't even make full use of the PC controls on offer.
The problem seems to be that you are judging console controls based on you own limited grasp of control schemes as a whole. You seem to assume that if
you find a control system difficult or annoying or you just plain don't understand, that
everyone must feel the same way.
You
are aware that DX on PS2 has exactly the same number of aug slots as DX on PC right? Of course, if you find something as simple as scrolling the mouse wheel annoying and time consuming, there's not a chance in hell you'd ever be able to get your head around a console control system.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Far Cry and F.E.A.R are two examples of PC FPS that only allow for a limited weapon selection. Most newer FPS use this system, as it requires the player to put more thought into what they carry.

Really? I only played a demo, but I never encountered any weapon limitations. It used the standard FPS top number row system. The only stupid thing was that the "3" button was used for both the shotgun and assault rifle, and after you selected 3 you had to enter another command to switch between the two. Maybe in the full game they ran out of numbers for the weapons and thats why they put two in the same row. Or does the full version just use a completely different system than the demo?

With all the buttons I have available, I've just never had the need to use the scroller. There are probably some games that would use it to good effect, but I've never played them. It's nice to know that the scroller exists in case it might be useful. Consoles, on the other hand, don't have all those buttons. Hence, their controls are limited.

Half-Life never had such a limitation. You must be thinking about Counter-Strike.

No offense people, but fuckin dry up will ya.
IW wasn't what hardcore fans wanted. It was great in its own right, that being a console game but it just didn't feel enough like the original. That wasnt down to crap interface, it's just the way the game was.
I think GBM said this a while ago, and quite right too, Joypads are good for consoles because console games are made for consoles and vice versa for pc's. Ports are, in general, shite....end of story.

Sorry... I thought you meant linking multiple weapons to a single key, not an actual limitation on the number of weapons you could carry.
System Shock had a weapon limit though it was 7.

Actually, story wise, DX IW was superior to the first game. It was actually structured and played out pretty cool. The first game more or less played on the whole conspiracy storyline craze dominant in the mid-to-late 90's and flaunted everything from Kennedy's assassination to the price of tea in China. It was actually pretty crazy if you consider all the crazy crap the the original author they had helming the story for it.

My thread, I can resurrect it if I want to.
Holy Dumier, what a lot of balanced debate.
Consoles sux lol, if it wasn't for IW's reasonable story I would not have played it 4 times, and Halo is a hyped POS that feels like one of those nightmares where you are trying to run from something and you are very slow. Anyway.
I played ZODIAC recently and it had Mead in it. That's why :D
