If I had to take a guess I'd say that "work" in this case consisted of consuming soft drugs that added to an existing mild psychosis with affects ranging from feelings of euphoria to depressive states of paranoia. Writing the program served mainly as a vehicle to escape unsatisfying real-world experiences and temporarily achieve the desired self-perception of acting as a "hacker" or programmer. This image was based on the System Shock computer games more than on an actual programmer's work, which resulted in an inability to transfer the desire into gratifying real world activities (writing useful code, getting a job as a programmer, etc).
Then posts to internet discussion boards were authored that reflected the mental status of the individual in a stream of consciousness monologue. Partly due to language problems but mostly because these posts were expressions of the fictional projection, the individual stayed isolated within the community. So it wasn't actually 8 years of work on a text file editor but 8 years of curling up in an escapist's bubble.

That would tie in with the "hackers" who occasionally delete or modify his work without him knowing. All joking aside if it's true then I hope that at least he finds working on it therapeutic no matter how useful the end product is for other people.

WOW!!! OWO!!! kolya is offending me again after 4 years after I tryed here to break here silence, and I pleased here a little to think not about crackers, and not like she names them hackers, as I did also mind about thouse, in the wrong way! I dont like to mind about such hating poor people! do you know what I mean kolya? I think that is not important, to ignore another fan. everyone is free to think 'offending' but no one should build up a silent hate, like I think you did, and prooved now. It is really bad and has nothing to do with sozial living, if actiongamers go this way bad! I thought you missunderstood my first offences to hackers, but I wonder why you speak with hate? did you too had teaken drugs, because you see such things as a beginning of illnes? I really have had differnent expiriences, and I know, that ever people making war, like the mod of the german site, aren't able to do other than thinking of war! mind about your thoughts and silence! but I will tell you what the story was like in real:
I bought ss2 shortly after it cames out. the german site has had a little handy forum. I really enjoyed to play ss2 with the feeling of pain, and I liked to played the tactic hacker way. I dont played it with great guns, but with my mind! as I had learned a little bit of pascal and delphi at shool. I quickly coded this old delphi version. and the german board was really fun! there were cute people, that answered my questions for my tool! btw: everytime I asked here such questions, nobody has had an answer! after I loaded up my tool, and after it was finished, I left the german community for years! back to 98/99 I was already here at ttlg.com one or two times. also earlier than you. I broke up my studies of electrical engineering, and tryed to studie software engineering. two years later I moved up to the university, and left the university of applied science. that was the time I got to learn java after the se with c++. I was impressed by its syntax. I liked to learn it more, and why shopuldnt I go back to these german site?! I had read through the hole forum, and missed the hackers-threads. I didnt cared about this, and also the the sweet old forum was gone! then reading the forum, I must see a thread, at which two of the childs there had written that they had tryed to conntact me about my tool, but I knew that was a lie and I tryed to be carefully about them. the wit is that foure of the so great site admins were about to dispute each other. I tryed to understand, but all I reached, was that two of them left the site! I were not happy with that, and I noted also, that not all dispute was gone! I tryed to learn those guys to know, but they doesnt liked that! there was a great silence! I was not sure that the real aggressor has left. there was a mod, who have had a nick of sickness, but he never told anything! then I did the mistalke, that I offended him! anything I got back, were lies! it was the same story, as of the two boys, that had left before! the mod carried the dispute into the forum, and nobody was interesstet about the real conflict, and any other personal problems, that leaded to this bad situation! full of anger I saw everythere hackers, because this mod had destroied two of my computers, and didn't said sorry or paied anything! he only seamed to be happy with his cracking, destroing and his intrigous plans. I left them, and I tryed to find here a home, but kolya dident understanded what has happend, and she wasnt inteessted! she only told, that there was a bug in the writing of the files of keybindings, but not exactly what has happend! this isn't really friendly! anyway, nobody had repoted any error, I think that say's enougth. I dont like to dispute again! that shopuld have become clear the last 5 years in here, and I hope that kolya also realizes it ;) remember that I asked you gently about movin up to ss.org, and that I tryed to say that I'm sorry!
however, I also think I am in serve of the multiplayers patche's readme ;D and this way the tool(not me) earns a special place as his home! ;D
anyone is like to continue the work? zylon, could you learn me the english language? =) I think I will first try to realize my idea of a uw1 und uw2 and ss texts-translation-tool. ;)
