It was Locke's suggestion to Jack that they lie about where they had been and what had happened. Consequently if Locke leaves the Island of course he is going to hide his name - he, through the Others, will know the lie that Jack and co gave about being the only survivors. Having John Locke then suddenly step out onto the world stage would draw too much attention.
As for why they don't say his name, this is part of the ongoing squabble between Ben and Widmore senior. They simply are maintaining the cover name for John both to protect the lie Jack and co made as well as hopefully confound Widmore's agents. Agents who would be very interested to know someone had come back from the Island post its move and thus could possibly get a handle on finding the Island again by tracking back along John's movements.

During the first seasons I always thought the Island was something much like the Ocean in Solaris what with all the apparitions and whatnot. Now that they are appearing off-island I'm not so sure anymore.. :erg:

Now that Locke is the new 'Ben', and can go off island to putter around and try to convince the Oceanic 6 to return and all- I'm interested in whether, when off island, Locke is back in the wheelchair. Is he full on healed, or is it only on the Island? The Island (actually Ben, Richard Alpert and crew?) temporarily took back the use of his legs to steer him in the direction they wanted him to go once before, so it can be taken away, but other than being able to be manipulated, is it permanent?
I've heard theories that Claire has actually been dead for a while (since she got sick and Juliette injected her with something) and that explains some of Miles obscure comments. We've seen that the Island can manifest physical things- Kate could touch her horse, Dave proved he was physical to Hurley, etc...
And I think both the Zodiac and the destroyed freighter went with the Island- once the Island went awol, I don't think they could see anything but water from the chopper.
