It's back! :D

Rezzing this thread mainly because I'm listening to (
https://soundcloud.com/the-canon-podcast/81-ed-wood) the latest episode of The Canon where Jonah Ray just summed up the creative process of making a movie, or anything really, in the most beautiful way I've ever heard.
The thing about any creative endeavour is that you think of an idea, and that's as perfect as it's ever gonna get. You start to write that idea, you've already started fucking it up. Then you shoot it, and now it's fucked up even more because now there's more people involved. And then you gotta edit it and now you gotta rely on some asshole who's gonna fuck it up even more. And then people are gonna watch it, and they're not gonna watch it in the right way, and they're now fucking it up even more for themselves, and you have no control.Fucking amen.

actually I dont agree with that, sometimes I have had an idea, and then made it real, like writing it or recording it or such, and it becomes a greater entity than you ever imagined.
Its the not having control thing that bothers people. Sometimes you have to let go.

Ok, maybe saying it gets "fucked up" is a bit strong, but I definitely relate to the feeling that the thing changes with each step towards it's completion. It's "purity" diminishing little by little. I don't collaborate much so in my case it isn't other people who mess it up, but more what works and makes sense outside of my own head. Out of the 3 games I've released, none have ended up looking like what I imagined before I started them. Stilt Fella was gonna have fully 3D gameplay, but actually controlling a physics simulated character on stilts in 3 dimensions turned out to be nigh on impossible, so I had to constrain the gameplay to 2 dimensions, and it was still a hard game to control. Trajectory went through a lot of changes but I never quite captured the feeling I wanted when I first thought of it. And Paradise's planned procedurally generated landscape that changed every time you started a new game quickly got scrapped in favor of a pre-made gameworld when I realized I was gonna need way more than 2 weeks for something like that.

That's... Very nice. Color me jealous. I've had a few pieces here and there work out better than I expected (sometimes I think about somehow making an entire game just around Glade Raid's fire system), but nothing on the scale of a full work.
For me it's less of a "long continuous series of f' ups" and more of an "iterative struggle to make reality conform closer and closer to imagination".

My idea on creative projects is a bell curve. There are so many factors, any one of which has a chance to derail things, to say nothing of the combination. Most projects fall on the slope, they're sliding but they're not complete disasters, somewhere between what's ideal and what's possible. A few of them end up in development hell on the outer edges of the curve when misfortunes seem to just stack on top of each other & conspire against it. And a precious few end up gloriously right at the top of the bell, where everything just fell into place and nothing was able to knock it out of place. But you can only control your own contribution.

I'm not big on politics, but recent events have made it... hard to look away. So I've been listening to a lot of political podcasts lately, and I wanted to share my favourites.
Serious:(
http://www.dancarlin.com/common-sense-home-landing-page/) Common Sense - Easily my fave! This one is by Dan Carlin, more famous for his Hardcore History podcast. Hearing him talk about issues of the day is often just as captivating as his history podcast is.
(
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/anxiety) United States of Anxiety - Interviews with regular Americans, both Republicans and Democrats. This one only ran for 8 episodes last fall, leading up to the election, but it's great stuff. Very illuminating. I pretty much just move in leftie circles (like TTLG), so it's nice to hear when conservatives can speak their frank opinions on issues without having to feel defensive about their stances.
(
http://www.earwolf.com/show/katie-couric/) Katie Couric - Interviews with a lot of politicians and insiders. Only listened to a few eps of this one, but I liked what I heard.
(
http://www.earwolf.com/show/fake-the-nation/) Fake The Nation - hosted by comedian Negin Farsad and featuring mostly comedians as guests, this one almost belongs in the lower category. But while the tone is generally lighter than in the previously-listed podcasts, they do discuss serious issues in an earnest way, and occasionally even feature guests who are more conservative or centrist.
Satirical:(
http://www.earwolf.com/show/hard-nation/) Hard Nation - The official pitch tells it better than I can:
"From the right, it's Mark Hard, and from the left it's Pete Hard! Join the Hard Brothers (Mike Still and Paul Welsh) for a bare-knuckle political brawl that will leave you with an America-shaped bruise on your brain." The episode where (
http://www.earwolf.com/episode/bill-clinton-winks-mischievously-w-mike-mitchell-anthony-atamanuik/) Mike Mitchell plays Bill Clinton is a good one. Go ahead and start there.
(
http://thebuglepodcast.com/) The Bugle - John Oliver used to be on this one, but then he had to give up on the podcasting dream and get a proper day-job. These days it's just Andy Zaltzman and a rotating panel of guests. The episodes with Wyatt Cenac are probably the best ones.

Been digging quite a bit at this New Retro Wave thing. Particularly Trevor Something. Got a cool Depeche Mode vibe going on there.

Ducky, we have a separate thread for music. This one is for podcasts.
I don't blame you. I blame Muzman for his vague thread-titling.
