the light went on... - by wun

note: i feel like this is gonna be wordy... :tsktsk:
 *ding*
the light's gone on...
the penny has dropped...
i finally understand everyone's quest to amass fortunes of money...
[rant]
now i been playin for a while.. head of just about everthing.. except morag tong (not finished the quests yet), thieves guild (won't let me join), and houses redoran and telvanni (since i am hlaalu)...
level 53 or so.... maxed out everything but two attributes...must have spent alot (and i mean alot with a captial ALOT.... i wouldn't be surprised if it came to around 150k if not more) on training... especially the magic skills.. since my character was given pretty much none...
but i stopped trying to get sell things.. i thought if i keep around 50k in liquid cash i be alright... so i just been piling all sellable booty (read items i am willing to part with that are worth around 6k) i been finding, onto the floor and not trying to hock it off as i did earlier...
decided it was time i explored spell making and enchanting more indepth (i made one echantment... damage health 45pts on my daedric katana)
to heighten maxed attributes and also reduce loads on my char...
i made restore attribute spells... so now i could dump all my restore potions... ahh much better.. felling lighter already... nice and cheap btw (cost 1pt of magicka for 19pts restore and payed 13gp each spell)...
thought good, that went well, with that extra confidence i thought... need some constant items... hmm a good levitate item come in handy... at the very least a water walkin item.. hmmm fortify strength and intelligence very handy too...
and this is when i realised.. getting stuff enchanted is bloody expensive!!!
raising attributes by like 8pts constant effect around 54k... (i think it was a exquisite belt i was trying to enchant with fortify strength)
(also after a test enchantment i noticed i can't get it done by the chick upstairs in balmore mage guild.. doesn't matter what soul gem i use.. she reckons it's hers..
damn my 5-finger discount hands)
and i also realised i must have not picked up and kept alot of decent clothing...
all those telvannin mages i chopped up... were potentially wearing exquisite clothing... which i didn't pick up...
so i went from feelin like a veteran player to feelin like a goose...
:weird: :weird: :weird:
so if i want to raise attributes by a decent amount i would have to enchant pants, shirt belt... maybe robe... bunch of rings and amulets... since glass armour is about as suitable for enchanting as scratching your eye with a battle axe whilst drunk... :erg:
so now i guess i gotta start selling my pile of loot... cos it's starting to sound expensive.. but now i gotta waste days selling stuff just to raise te appropriate funds..
:nono:
[/rant]
i guess that had no point... :erg:

i completely understand, the only difference is that i used to keep 100k just for emergencies:cheeky: ....
then one day i happend by a daedric shrine, saw a golden saint, sliced her to bits, trapped her soul and thought "Wow! off to the enchanter I go!"
my friend in the caldera mages guild (100/100 dispo) says ,"Excuse me 'friend' but in order to enchant these equisite clothes with constant effect chameleon for your pursuit of slink around/hach-a-slash whoever you want -well at least for the morag tong- (what i do is my own affair)- i will need at least 300,000." and grins slightly.
okay enough of that...
my advice is to buy mark and recall spells...goto everybody's favorite mudcrab and mark
go back to your stash and pick up all the goodies....recall and barter away....
consider this forewarning...i did this very thing and it took me...cough*6hours*cough....
but it will be worth it in the long run...

FYI
Ok, I did the math on this one day to see what was worth it.
Mudcrab, mark/recall + alumsi/divine intervention to return right?
round trip (to bolmara for me at least) is approx: 6 mins. + selling time of 1 min.
7 min per 10k
Creeper, mark/recall + mages guild teleport.
Round Trip: 1 minute + 1 minute selling time
2 min per 5k. (I did it faster than that.)
Selling 150k in an hour for Creeper vs. 86k in an hour for the Mudcrab.
If you have a fast way to caldera, then its much more worth it to do sell to the Creeper.
(whom is definately much more entertaining)
I currently have 980k of my 1.2m left.

Don't let me spoil all the 'fun' but why not just use the gold cheat? (
player->additem gold_100 "x") :ebil: Or in the least take advantage of a bug or two if you aren't using the patched version.. Even if you are, I'm sure there are a few things they've missed (or someone hasn't found yet). But you could always be using the XBox version.. In which case I couldn't help you. I'm all for playing the game by the rules, but after a certain point one can only throw up ones arms in utter frustration at the absurdity of the 'total immersion'. It's just like when I was playing
Dark Cloud and ran out of water/food (or my weapon was beginning to break and I had no funds to fix it :eww:) and my health began to suffer because of it. After a point, a game gets
too realistic and spending real-time days raising an attribute one point is a good example for me. Plus, I'm planning on actually playing this game again, as a drastically different path/character, so why waste any more time than I need to in order to have fun? Tr00, I wouldn't use the cheats so much to make the darn thing easy (basically feeling horrible at the end of the day anyway because I manipulated the system so much :erg:), but sometimes, at least for me, I would go insane doing it the conventional way. After all, I'm getting started in college soon (and I've playing music in a band for a while) so I don't have all the time I used to to spend hundreds of hours on
Final Fantasy (or a similarly time-intensive affair). But let me shut up before I offend more people :joke:

wun, I'm happy for you. I remain a dim bulb.
My in-game journal says it's day 495. I'm only level 22, have enchanted nothing & concocted not one potion. Have discovered the limitations of a low intelligence RedGd character viz-a-vis rising in the Mages Guild - there are attributes I need to raise in order to advance but haven't the $ to purchase the training, & as a sword wielding character, Magicka comes neither easily nor cheaply.
Have abandoned the notion of Mage Guild advancement, for now, & am wondering how far this, or any character for that matter, can proceed w/an attribute of low intelligence & way less than even 1/2-assed Magicka skills. Meanwhile, I'm off to pick up w/my old bud's, the Fighters Guild, then maybe move on to the Imperial Legion, the Imperial Cult & the House Redoran before moving into the 4th Trial stage of the main thread.
It's kind of funny, really. I've plenty of valuable captured soul gems, even some Golden Saint & Ascended Sleeper beauties, but neither enough $ to purchase enchantments or Magicka skills to perform my own. (60K up in 'Try Again' smoke! I don't think so.) I'm currently carrying about 32K in coin, the most I've ever had at one time, but it's really kind of worthless. Like you, I've pro'ly spent 50K-60K raising my lowly Magicka skills & still could easily spend 2 - 3 times that to get 'em maxed out. The 4 Caldera towers are full to overflowing w/stuffs. Maybe I should liquidate but I don't know what to hock & what to keep. It's tempting to hit the ~ key & just 'fix' the $ problem but so far I've been able to resist the temptation. Haven't even yet gone looking for the mud crab.
Played 'honestly', I don't know if the game is any deeper but it sure must be a heck of a lot wider. Am already planning my next character designed to be able to do some Magicka. Gonna trade in my sword for plasma balls & a more natural ability to enchant. Creeper's gonna be drowning in potions.
Where's the in-game treasure chest w/1,000,000 gp's?
wun on 23/8/2002 at 07:33
haha justnomega... dude you sound down...
my magic skills were all single digits when i started...
i have 4 in the eighties now and one in 50's.... that should tell you alone that i spent a fair bit of gold..
then the money i spent on various other skills i thought be useful.. like alchemy...
the only 'cheating' i've done so far is i've now looked up a list of master trainers
went to look for the master trainer for enchanting... he don't like me much though... as soon as he becomes aware i am around he summons various beasties and other equally nasty spells.. so i that sucks i gotta build my enchant skill up naturally... which means i am gonna be runnin round hackin and soul trappin every small critter and then recharging items... i think he is probably telvanni.. they dun like me much in general... being the head of house hlaalu and having chopped up a fair few of their snobby-we-think-we're-so-much-better members...
umm what u been doing?? lvl 22 and day 495?? damn.. haha i might be coming up to 200..... mages guild was the second last guild i completed and at that stage most of my magics were in their 70's... so i shot through the ranks in a few hours realtime... (plus i skipped 8 or 10 quests due to some overzealous chopping earlier on) but i thought u be much higher level than that... for a while there i could walk to steps without being told i was ready to level up...
as for what to hock in... i am debating the same thing... i've got a pile that has been marked for sale from get go... but i also got like glass daggers of various types...
and other tanto's and stuff that i could sell to the crab.. (when i find the thing... i am very afraid that i might accidently haved offed it already with a careless arrow) basically it comes down to do i want to keep my pretty display (which no one ever gonna see anyway) or do i liquidate it... i think for the moment i will go finish the morag tong quests while i debate this...

wun, Well, yeah. It is kind of a downer. Have been doing some chores for the Fighters Guild & have accumulated just shy of 48K in gp's. I'm at that point where my 'joy' comes fr one of the trainers FINALLY saying, "I can teach you nothing more in that skill.", or whatever it is they say when you get to that point w/them. I've been taking it slow & easy, still enjoying the game, just don't feel like I'm going or getting anywhere. I've been trying to figure out which factions go w/which factions so as to avoid a conflict of allegiances while questing/advancing thru the ranks of the various guilds/houses, to my mind, an even bigger MW mystery than the disappearance of the dwarves. Anyone ever spread sheet that issue? Meanwhile, reveal the map thru exploration, let 'em live & free the slaves! Took me forever to find the BoneBiter Bow tomb, Ditto Sargon. Funny, how you can find just about everything in an area but your target. I've got a fishing pole! Is there a 'Gone Fishing' plug-in yet?
Forsythe on 23/8/2002 at 21:30
wun: Try using an invisibility effect and talking to him; that way you can brine him to 100% and he won't attack then.
jstnomega: The factions' likes/dislikes are pretty common-sensical (eg: Telvanni are disliked by Twin Lamps & Mage Guild), but that shouldn't stop you from joining 'em. The only think that'll stop you from joining a faction is your own actions (killing Thieves makes 'em not let you in, etc); everything else just effects a higher or lower disposition of the factions members towards you... and 'Persuade'-ing them can raise that easily enough.
jstnomega on 23/8/2002 at 22:36
Forsythe, OK. That helps - A LOT! Thx for the 'Persuasion' tip. I'll join up w/o giving it a second thought. BTW, something amusing & wonderful happened today. wun asked what I had been doing all this time. Eydis Fire-Eye (Who came up w/these names?) gave me 3 orders/duties & promptly said something like, "Oh. I see you've already dispatched so and so. Then I guess I really should pay you. Here ya go." BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! 500/1000/1000 gp's + rank advancement. That was a special moment. Actually have something to look forward to now as I go fr Fighters Guild to Fighters Guild looking for orders/duties, cuz I been a very busy splorer & this place is just teeming w/corpses.
Forsythe on 23/8/2002 at 22:56
Anytime ;) And yeah, the Fighters' Guild is very well-written in that regard; careful, most factions aren't so well-written, and you'll never get credit for quests you do early in some of 'em. (A good example is the Imperial Cult's Oracle missions)
