Incidentally you can "search"/generate random pages, and if you click "Angleshize", so it highlights words & near words, for a typical page there will be about 200~300 actual words and about the same number of near words. Well it's very liberal with what it considers a word, but more than 100 easily. Calling it "coherent" would probably be going too far, but it's not that hard to find words on any page.
Also I noticed that every page always lists a place in its library, which is only 5 shelves, 4 walls, 32 volumes, 500 pages = 320,000 pages in total. So I think it may actually be saving generated pages as it gets searches...
Wait, wait, wait... Could somebody check Volume 28, Shelf 4, Wall 2, p. 384 and report what you see? If it's coherent, then it's saving pages by search. Then the first sentence of the next page, 385, is "r,nnjwbytzpyftqbl." and if someone else sees that too, then it's also saving generated pages when they're visited.
I think this is right. Someone may have already figured this out above, and it's probably documented somewhere, but it's interesting for me to run a little experiment on it anyway.
If you search really famous lines, they'll tend to be quite low numbers. So, e.g., "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." is Wall 4, Shelf 4, Volume 28, pg. 224, and the entire page is only that line. And if you search "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." (a period instead of a comma), that's at Wall 3, Shelf 2, Volume 26, pg. 108. My point is, wall 3 and wall 4 are still quite near to the entrance. So I think those searches came early, before more (higher numbered) walls and shelves were added.
I think it just adds new walls and shelves as needed by the searches or random generations coming in.

Yeah, that's my text (starting from 'find me blueprints'). It's also not a coincidence that both the max length of the hex name and the max length of the search string are both 3200 characters. The hex name contains all the information and acts like a seed for the random text generator. It's not so much that there's an infinite number of different texts that this software "searches", but rather you give it a text and from that it generates a seed that generates the text.
The key here is that the generation mechanism works both ways, from seed to text as well as from text to seed. It doesn't search anything, it's a generator of two-way (text, seed) -pairs. There are also a few options where you can have your text appear:
1. With nothing else on that particular page.
2. Surrounded by random characters.
3. Surrounded by random English words.
This is simply due to the generator having these generation features, not due to your text actually appearing in these three contexts and the engine searching for them. Otherwise we might as well have the further options:
4. Surrounded by ASCII-art.
5. Surrounded by haikus.
6. Surrounded by palindromes.
PS. My text was from Ultima Underworld. Once you decend to the second level of the Abyss, you meet a rambling dwarf who has lost his blueprints.
EDIT: Forgot to underline that from this it follows that the software doesn't need to store any of the searches, since all the information can be encoded in the hex name. The same hex name will always generate the same set of walls, shelves, volumes and pages, with your text in there somewhere.
EDIT 2: Interesting to note, that if you search for your exact text again, you will not get the same location. A different one is generated. A text can generate many different seeds, but a seed only generates one text.
