I find it to vary wildly from reasonably amusing to utter crap.

A friend recommended me this. I was sceptical at the beginning as I have aversion to "one room sitcoms" of US production, fortunately I quickly realized it's British and the humor reflects it. Anyway, perhaps it's too early to judge the series completely as I saw just 5 episodes so far.

I wanted to like it out of reverance to graham lineham (writer), and while it's occasionally funny it's not a patch on father ted.

I've seen as few episodes and it's rarely any good at all. There have been one or two hilaaaaarious moments though. I still wouldn't recommend it.
You want a good British sitcom? Peep Show friends, embrace the Peep Show.

Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Father Ted, The IT Crowd.
No just joking

I was just going to ask on which channel I could watch this, but then there's always youtube.
By luck I catched the first episode and it's admittedly fresh in some ways - an alternative in many aspects to sitcoms I've seen so far.

It's ok, I was hoping for more computer geek jokes, but the situations are just like in any other comedy really. Its often not related to computers/IT at all, except for the setting obviously, but it has a very minor role. If it wasn't for Moss i probably wouldn't have watched it.. I really dont care much for Roy, not very funny and his accent/voice is just totally annoying to hear.
The Mighty Boosh was, imo, a much better (and extremely original) show and it contains the few good actors from IT crowd.

Moss and Roy are two quite different nerd prototypes. Moss represents an "aslept teenager" sort of a geek, lowclass corporate playboy, crazy laidback. Roy is more cultured, conservative, he has deep knowledge about computer stuff, but at the other hand he's quite timid and not very practical. So, two extreme sides of IT geekery. And it's possible that one wouldn't work without each other.
I've heard that Episode 2 was the peak of this series and it goes down further, hm.

I think you've mixed them up.. Moss is clearly the one who knows more about computers, Roy always asks him to fix things for him. Moss does some crazy inventions in some ep's..
