I think you'll find that's what turning your fucking phone off is for.

At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, I'm happy enough with my Nokia 2610 for £10. It calls people, has an address book, and even does SMS*. It probably does a whole heap of other stuff, but I'm too busy with life to use any of it...
With the open-source debate earlier, I tried playing around with Linux (Ubuntu), and whilst the installation procedure is much better than the last time I looked at Linux (around 2001), I still don't really see the attraction, apart from that it didn't cost me anything. I'm happy enough with Windows XP64, and will be for a long time yet I guess. Granted, I happily use Firefox because I prefer the interface to the newer versions of IE, but that's only because of the interface. Visual Studio 2005/8 seems way better than the IDEs I tried for g++, for instance.
I'm waffling now, so I'll stop... :(

I'm beginning to seriously consider getting a G1, as I finally got to poke around with one for a bit last weeked, and found it's interface to actually be pretty damn slick. Like RBJ, I am inherently distrustful of the iPhone's all touch screen interface (and T-Mobile doesn't have the iPhone yet anyway), but it would seem that the Android 1.5/Cupcake/Donut firmware is going to add a bunch of stuff that the current firmware lacks, and will bring it's functionality a bit closer to the iPhone's. Most notably they're adding multi-touch support for the browser (and, I would assume, Google Maps). Also a touch screen keyboard and some other crap that I don't really care about anyway.
On the first hand: I kind of don't want to bump my phone bill from 40 to 75 dollars a month so I have the unlimited data plan.
On the other hand: Having Google Maps in my pocket would be incredibly fucking handy for the New York meet.
On the gripping hand: I'm not sure if it'll fit comfortably in the pocket that I am accustomed to sticking my phone in. And as everyone knows New York is full of thieves and scoundrels (insert Wall Street joke here), and I wouldn't want the increased risk of pocket pickage from having a phone obviously sticking out of my pocket.
[edit]It would also seem that T-Mobile doesn't have any 3G coverage in my entire county, which is a bit ass (EDGE coverage everywhere locally, which I guess isn't too bad, first gen iPhone did alright with that). LA and NY are pretty well saturated, though. And I have wi-fi at home and at work. Will have to check out the phone at the store some more.

I'm deeply considering taking back the Storm and waiting for a Palm Pre. After a couple days of fairly heavy use, the Storm still feels clunky and counter intuitive. I feel like I'm fighting the thing to do the simplest tasks. It also has a tendency to hang on occasion for no apparent reason. And finally, despite my earlier ambivalence, I'm finding I don't really dig the touch screen keyboard too much.
The Pre looks like the next best bet. It has all the features I like about the Storm, and has a physical keyboard. If it sports the speed and ease of use of the iPhone, I'm sold.
Hell, I'm still wondering if I need this much in a phone to begin with.

New phone get!
Still getting used to it, but it's spiffy.
Now, of course, I must install a hacked firmware for additional spiffyness.

I'm a Nokia man through and through. The N95 8GB is the best piece of machinery I've ever owned - except for my penis, but only because that can't text or take VOIP calls*.
*yet.

iPhone 3G S. Not really worth upgrading if I have to pay O2 compensation to break my existing contract. Smart move, mongbats - make it harder for Applefags who'd otherwise be all over the shiny new toy.

Apple have messed up with only giving the iPhone to O2 altogether though. I'm hoping they have the good sense to break that exclusivity deal now that the contract is due for renewal. There are many, many people who would have iPhones but don't want/can't switch provider.
