Microsoft have been playing this angle recently, Eva and yes, it is true. You can get Windows and Linux based machines that are cheaper than Apple's. You can also get ones that are much more expensive. Well isn't that just utterly surprising.
Let's move into the Desktop arena. For the price of (
http://www.magnummaconline.co.nz/public/product/group.php?pgid=AP01) any of these Imacs, I could spec up and have PC's custom built by reliable computer businesses that obliterate them.
Only idiots buy pre-made desktops from corporate giants like Dell and especially their Alienware division. Laptops are an entirely different kettle of fish though.

Price vs. performance and gottdamn smarmy ass sales reps at the Mac stores are the main reason why I have yet to pick up anything Apple. I was looking at the Cinema Displays here just the other day, and for what you get, you're paying way, way, WAY too much money. Hell, they're almost comparable in price to Eizo monitors, while sporting basic Dell LCD specs.
I don't care that Apple products make me feel like I'm getting seduced by a sexy robot. I ain't forking over that much cash for something that's basically on the high end of run of the mill once you get past the initial shiny-pretty factor.

Word. A lot of people at work have Macs (as home machines or laptops) and they seem to be the sort of people who hate computers. Yeah yeah you can install Windows and Linux and tweak if you want to but people who buy these things admit that a. they find them cool, b. they find them easy to use and c. why would I want an alternative to insert program here?
Ease of use is desirable, of course, but when it comes at the double price (a ha) of cost and being locked-in to some degree I'll say no thanks. I was looking to upgrade the gf's laptop a while ago and I know she'd like a Mac due to the cooing over some of our friend's Mac laptops. But when I saw the price-for-power bs I did a back flip and kicked Jesus in the teeth.

Metrosexuals, homosexuals and girls have Macs.

Part of the problem, i think, is that there is no real alternative out there to the iphone for us "proper" users to move to.
The closes in terms of functionality is possibly the N95 8GB from Nokia but thats quite an old device by today's standards. The google phone never really grabbed the public attention like Apple has - although I've seen a few people more recently with a G1 on the tube.
Until something either from Nokia or the next Google Phone is released and accepted publicly, the Apple lovers amongst us can always through back in our faces that there is nothing like the iphone on the market. And sadly they are right.

Personnally I'm waiting for the Palm Pre, if this baby's as good as advertised it could well be the first real iPhone competitor out there. Plus it has a physical keyboard.

My first thought was more like: Gotta give a girl something shiny to play with. Not doing so will have Jesus kick you in the teeth badly.
