I suppose you should be able to shoot Paul in the arm enough times to make him drop the gun, right? Last run through I tried to murder Nicolette in her mother's house. She dropped her gun after a while, but I couldn't for the life of me get her to die. Should be the same thing.

I carry my melee weapon in slot #1 in case I have to kill someone silently and quickly.

One will have to admit that there is no causality between the purpose of a melee weapon and the slot it's assigned to. The equip button is your friend!

I can't figure why a character that doesn't take any damage could possibly get their arm strength level down low enough to drop their gun, so I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. Plus he always wangs you with his plasma rifle first.
