As much as I'd like to think we can guillotine our way out of this, no, I don't think there is a solution. When you get right down to it, this country is just as bad as the empires that spawned it.

Is this country as bad or as great as those empires? This country is a lot younger than those empires so there's room to grow and become the socialist dreamland so many desire.

Everything is socialism.

Yup. I don't hang out with my friends and family any more. Some of the more liberal people I know call it "being social," and I refuse to engage in that, because I'm not a communist.
I also refuse to make long trips to and from places for much the same reason.

One of the most fascinating, and slightly terrifying, things in my life was moving from a very liberal state to a very conservative state. Growing up and living most of my life in a liberal area had a lot of pros and cons but completely opposite of living in a highly conservative area now. The biggest similarity is that 1st amendment rights are socially trampled on in both liberal and conservative states. In the liberal state they say "You can't say that because it's racist!" In the conservative state they say "You can't say that because it's blasphemous!" Living in both states I say what I want because I carry a gun openly. The 1st and 2nd are yin and yang.

Why would a gun make a difference? I've been a moderate- shading liberal- all my life from a deep red state and I say what I want any time I feel like it. A lot of the time I don't explain what idiots they are for worshipping conman Trump just because he hates the same folks they do because I'm generally nice but if pushed I do explain exactly how I think. I haven't changed a single mind, but I haven't had a gun pointed at me, for that anyway.
Besides, it's not like you get to shoot them in the air and dance around like Yosemite Sam.

Whereas I moved away from a very right-wing state that only seems to be getting more right-wing (and violently so) to a more progressive one and I feel much safer here than I ever did back home. But even that's only marginally so, as my right to exist at all, let alone exist as who I am, is seen as a political issue even here.

Don't know what everyone is so worried about. Here's a State Representative, James Hieb (R) of Oregon, demonstrating responsible gun ownership as practiced by the Law & Order Party.

Nothing to see here, folks, other than a belligerent drunk with a concealed pistol.

I'm not worried.
