Hm, I might just buy it - interested in Gold, since you all recommend it over TDP, but it would primarily be for Deadly Shadows. Rather ironic, but DS is the only Thief I've played, and yet the only one I don't own a copy of. I picked up The Dark Project, second hand, for 80 pence a few weeks ago, and just earlier today I got the original UK box release of The Metal Age, still in cellophane (just 16 quid off Amazon :D). Going over back to my parents' for a couple of weeks, and I'm gonna take it with me on the laptop.

Thief Gold has some issues compared to the original- Mage Towers is irritating and Thieves' Guild is a nightmare, not to mention some NMAing over changes to The Lost City, but IMO the expanded story which makes direct references to TMA (which makes it feel a little bit more of a trilogy rather than just a series of sequels) and THE FUCKING OPERA HOUSE more than make up for it.
Song of the Caverns is easily, easily one of my top 5 OMs.

In that case I'll see how much of an impression TMA makes story-wise, since I'm going backwards anyway. If it's as stellar as most suggest, I'll go through Gold instead of TDP. Thanks for the info!

Get Gold anyway just for THE FUCKING OPERA HOUSE.

Ah, ok, I'm guessing pants-shitting is involved.

You lost me there.

NMAing? And is it worth playing the dark project if you've only ever had gold then? or just for the other lost city?

No Mutants Allowed, AKA the Fallout community. My use of the word "NMAing" refers to the Thief fanbase getting all honked off about the Lost City's craymen getting replaced by Mages for Gold (it makes more sense if you check some of the readables). As in at least a couple of people are still mad about it afaik. IMO the craymen were just a standin because they couldn't include Mage Towers in TDP, and without Mage Towers, there could be no Mages.
Personally I always felt Gold was ultimately superior to TDP. Gold was released because LGS felt the game needed to have one talisman per mission; that and the obvious references to TMA (which in turn refers back to stuff in Gold) clinches it for me as the "true" version of the game. It's a shame TMA's Gold version never got released.
Besides, it's not like you can't play TDP FMs in Gold...

I just looked the Opera House up on a Thief wiki - I'd assumed it was supposed to be like a scary level, à la Shalebridge Cradle, but it looks like I was completely off.

Yes indeed... my question was whether it's worth playing the dark project if you have gold though? And if so what parts?
Gold does rather seem like the "how they wanted it to be but ran out of time" version indeed.
I am surprised that the community isn't really taking up the task of creating a thief 2 gold - what with the journals and half finished missions at all. Yes I know there is a mission in progress using one of the missions but as the author of that mission has stated it isn't part of thief 2 gold and is actually a separate mission he is making it seems odd that people have taken this to be that it is "still in development". It seems more like it is not.
It makes me want to learn dromed and at least try it, however I also realise that trying to create thief 2 gold when new to dromed and also not well versed in the details of thief story (not finished gold or 2 yet :o or started 3) it would be a foolish undertaking.
I feel with a community made thief 2 gold it would really help round off what actually is a much more detailed and very enjoyable playing experience - I don't see why people slate thief 2 so much. Well actually it seems more a case of "I played thief 1 first, and nothing can compare".
