Quake 2, while also an old-school fps, was quite different from Quake and really didn't feel like it should have been called Quake 2. Q1 had you running through military bases and ancient castles to blast various otherworldly horrors. Q2 had you fighting in some futuristic war against an army of cyborgs. It probably gave those who expected some sort of continuation of Q1 a big WTF moment, hence the resentment.
From what I've read, Quake II was just a working title...only it stuck because they couldn't think of something else to call it that wasn't trademarked.
Then again, it's not a series known for continuity. Quake III Arena didn't really have all that much in common with the last two games either, and Quake IV is a bit of a surprise in actually being a sequel to a prior game.

While I enjoy Quake 2 (and love Quake 4) Quake 1 is hands down my favourite. The creepy mishmash of Lovecraftian overtones and rusty sci-fi works disturbingly well.

Trials 2: Second Edition direct from (
http://store.redlynx.com/) RedLynx for US$2 until April 14th.
DRM seems to be limited (3) online activations with the RedLynx servers. (I only bothered investigating that because I would have bought a second copy if it was DRM-free.)

My thoughts on the game (which I bought for .50c more in a Steam sale) were:
Quote:
Hard as nails, but hilarious fun, and very addictive!
I punished myself through to the end of the default 'easy' and 'medium' levels, by which point I knew that even attempting any of the 'hard' levels would be an exercise in stupidity.
However, there's a brilliant online feature which allows you to view replays of people who are really really good at this game, so not only can you entertain yourself by watching alien motorcycle gods do flawless runs of the level you just clawed your way to the end of, but you can watch them ride the levels you don't even want to attempt, and thus still get some value out of them with no actual pain caused to yourself :)
There are a bunch of bonus levels at 'easy' and 'medium' as well, so I still have lots to play. Really great value at this price.

A mech warrior game for free? sweetness!
Shadowcat on 1/5/2010 at 06:48
Yeah, I was keeping an eye on that one :)
I thought I'd give the servers a few days to calm down before bothering to download it.
Most people do seem to say that MW4 wasn't as good as MW3, and I have MW3, but still... it's got to be worth a look at this price!

I actually think Mechwarrior 4 is great - cheesy, but good clean fun, nice 'mech progression, good customization. I haven't played Black Knight, but Mercenaries is better than Vengeance and is just awesome.

Here we go again.
Call of Juarez: $3.90
Prey: $2.90
Painkiller: Black Edition: $3.90
STALKER Clear Sky: $2.90
These are the games I'm considering from GoGamer.com's 48 hour sale. Recommendations? Are there any I shouldn't bother with? I mean, the prices are pretty low, so I kind of doubt that they won't be enjoyable enough to at least cover the price, but I still wanted to get the opinions of those more experienced than I. Thanks in advance.

What about Two Worlds for ninety cents, Enchantermon...?
Or Necrovision, BiA: Hell's Highway, Velvet Assassin. RPG game pack (which is Gothic 3 and Dungeon Lords together for $4), Prince of Persia, etc? All are under $5, most under $4.
By the way. What are your specs again?

Hmm. Ah, heck, why not. Even if I don't like it, it can't be so horrible that I'd feel cheated out of less than a dollar. :P

I'm assuming these all come highly recommended? Prince of Persia I have, but the others I didn't recognize, so I passed them over. I'll take another look.

By the way. What are your specs again?
OS: Windows 7, 32-bit.
Processor: Inter Centrino (Core) Duo, 1.66 GHz per core
RAM: 4 GB (3.whatever usable, of course)
Graphics: NVidia Geforce Go 7300
Sound: Realtek High-Definition Audio
Though I've only got a couple months of school left, and once I'm out and making money I'll be saving up to buy a gaming desktop, so even if I can't run some games now, I should be able to before too terribly long.
