Oh, and don't forget, secrets were in Quake 1! So actually, it does have more than just run around shooting.

Well, the 1st is my favorite (actually Quake 4 is, but it isn't in that sale) and is very fun. A lot of secret areas to find and explore and goodies to discover. Great fun.
reading the entire thread FTW!!!

Um, you basically just described what an fps is.
I know, but I like having a story, or at the very least an objective to work towards that's more than "kill everything in sight." It doesn't have to have SS2 depth, of course, but if it's at least there and making sense...kind of like Half-Life 1. The story was nowhere near as in-your-face as SS2's, but it existed and existed well in-between the action

Now, quake III removes campaign mode all-together, and is a fast paced hectic multiplayer frag fest. Since I am not very good at competitive games, especially one this fast paced, I don't care for quake 3 really. However, you might be the opposite, I dunno.
No, I'm not that great at that sort of thing either.

I am in shock...you have never even TRIED a Quake game? Ever? Really?
Really. I'm behind, I know, but I got into FPS gaming much later than everyone else (2003-ish)

Seems to be the consensus, so I think I'll go for it. As long as there's
something besides just running around shooting, I'll probably have fun.

Quake 3 is just arena-based deathmatch mostly, with offline bots. No real narrative or anything resembling a single-player game.
Yeah, that's what sNeaksie said, too. I think I'll skip it.

Quake 2 is best forgotten.
Really? What was so bad about it?

gunsmoke, I read your post, so don't be an ass. I just forgot you had said that.:nono:

I honestly don't know either. Personally, I feel it isn't the same as Quake 1, but that doesn't make it a bad game. Also, judging by what you just said I would actually think that you would enjoy quake 2 perhaps more than quake 1.
I played quake 1 on pc and quake 2 on playstation - for quake 2, the one thing I could certainly say was annoying was the loading zones, but that may not be the case in quake 2 pc. (Correct me if I'm wrong on that.)

Quake 1 is IMO
the classic FPS, moreso than Doom or Duke Nukem 3D.
God so hard to choose.

Quake 2, while also an old-school fps, was quite different from Quake and really didn't feel like it should have been called Quake 2. Q1 had you running through military bases and ancient castles to blast various otherworldly horrors. Q2 had you fighting in some futuristic war against an army of cyborgs. It probably gave those who expected some sort of continuation of Q1 a big WTF moment, hence the resentment.

Looks like I'll go ahead and get Quake 1 and 2. What about the map packs? Are they worth the extra $5?
Yes, I tend to be very frugal. :p

Ah, I can see that... But for me it didn't much matter cause it still felt like quake. Just more modern. Also, sequels (goes for movies too) are usually never as good as the original. Maybe it is that nostalgia, or maybe it is for other reasons all-together.

As far as Q2 goes, if you enjoy the single-player game, then I think "The Reckoning" is definitely worth getting.

I think it also depends sometimes on how soon they are released. I'd rate Xenon 2 and Speedball 2 over their original incarnations any day for example, but if the sequels had been released today nostalgia would probably overrule a large part of that. Or maybe the Bitmap Brothers were just really good at sequels.
