Why? Steam is great. What's the problem? And what alternative source do you suggest, out of curiosity?
The only problem I have with Steam is that it forces all installs to be done inside its own directory, which isn't really that big of a deal, it just means a few extra clicks if you want to get to the game directory.
And I could have bought DX from D2D, but on Steam I saved $1.50. Not much, but I like pinching my pennies.

I bought Mr. Robot mostly not knowing about it for three reasons:
* The robots remind me of the lovable Scuzzer droids from Startopia. In fact, the look of the game in general reminds me a lot of the Technology Deck of Startopia. It's a damn crime that game didn't get a sequel.
* The graphics and isometric angle remind me of an old Game Boy game I never got too far in called Altered Space. I always wanted to play that game to completion, but I didn't even have a manual for it. It was a tough little game, but fairly advanced for its time.
* It was two bucks.

I would suggest checking somewhere other than steam if you can stand it, but it sure is tempting to buy off there since it is so cheap.
At this point, I think it's still OK to dislike or distrust Steam. I always go with an alternative like GOG if it's available because I hate having to phone home to install or even play a game. It's galling, and I won't put up with it unless I have no choice.
But unless you know of a worthy alternative for a specific game, general unrequested badmouthing of Steam just comes across as whining.

@gunsmoke: Clearly you don't understand what steam is then. With steam, you are forced to use said product on it.. you have to have it running to play. Not to mention, you need an internet connection... and blah blah blah. I guess you havent' seen cardia's steam thread eh?
Alternative source? Anywhere other than steam - say, amazon, ebay, whatever.
Don't get me wrong, steam is still a pretty good service, but it's got some problems. I'm trying to buy games that can only be obtained on steam, otherwise I'll buy elsewhere. At least I'll try anyway
Sir. I have been a Steam user since day 1. Literally. I bought Half-Life 2 the day it released @ retail. The only problem I have had in all of these years? The four hours it took to verify HL2, due to its less than stellar launch. Steam is probably the best thing to happen to PC gaming since the 3D accelerator. Yeah, the debut was bumpy, but man has it improved in the last 5+ years.
I ALSO understand that NO, your Do NOT need to be online to play the damn games. You only need to either verify the retail intall's files online or download the game in the first place. There is an offline mode. I used it for several months a few years back when I was in between jobs and killed my broadband connection.
It is really cool to have Steam for patches and updates. Searching for, and downloading patches (especially considering the enormous size they can be these days) is just a headache. Auto-updating for the fucking win.
And LMFAO. Yes, I have seen that goddamn trainwreck of a thread in the T4 anticipation forum. Ignorance and paranoia running rampant with jtr7 trumpeting the horns calling his knob-slobbering, zombie-like legions of followers to arms. Like the damn game would ONLY be released on Steam. What the hell are the odds of that? I know 90% of gamers would be sorely disappointed if it DIDN'T end up on Steam as an option to purchase.

You're not helping your argument.
why not? there's legitimate points in that thread behind all the whining and hating.

Actually, it IS a big deal. In fact, it is really quite a pain in the ass. Let me give you an example: Let's say you have only 2 GB left on your primary partition (assuming you have two drives, or two partitions) and want to install TF2. Well, you can't. So, you think to yourself, why not install the game on the secondary partition? Well, you can't. As you just pointed out. DISCLAIMER: This was an extreme example but it can happen.

Whining? What part of my post was whining? Stating flaws within a program is not whining, it's... well, showing the flaws. The tone of that sentence you quoted was not of whining... How does saying " I suggest" equate whining? Or were you talking in general and not necessarily talking about me?
@gunsmoke: Well sorry then, but because you said "what's the problem?" it was like you never used steam or didn't understand it very well. Anyone who has used steam long enough will realize it isn't perfect. In fact, I didn't even realize how problems w/ steam until cardia's thread - so despite it being a train wreck of a thread, it made you think. Least it did to me.
Also, 90%? Seems a bit high.. Anyway, you may have missed that a few people mentioned that they wouldn't mind it as an
option, instead of it being the only way to go. I agree.

Stating flaws in a program is not the same as stating flaws in a program and then going off on a rant about how Steam is killing PC gaming and how Steam anally raped your mother and poured sugar in your gas tank. Also cardia is a known idiot whose grasp of English is only marginally better than his grasp on reality (we seem to have a lot of those around here.)
sNeaksieGarrett on 1/1/2010 at 03:42
Yes, but I wasn't going off on a rant. I may have been frustrated, but I didn't act like cardia did.
june gloom on 1/1/2010 at 06:23
No, but you brought up the thread in question. It's a shit thread and doesn't help your argument any more than the ice in Shattered Memories bolsters Fragony's global cooling argument.
And anyway when you get to the point where a discussion of Steam- or, in TTLG's case, more often a discussion of something else entirely, often only tangentially related to Steam or not related at all- can't be held without someone barging in and blaming Steam for everything from the Holocaust to being the second gunman on the grassy knoll, it's time to start a cull.

As mentioned in the parent thread, the Tex Murphy series is 50% off this weekend. (
http://www.gog.com/en/promo/tex_murphy) GoG.com.
I picked up Tex Murphy 1+2 back when GoG gave it away for free, but hadn't gotten the chance to play it yet. Are the rest of them worth picking up?
