Derren Brown isn't the sort of person I'd have marked down as an idiot with a 2 second attention span, nor (I suspect) would you. Hopefully you'll be secure and intelligent enough to see the value of questioning your beliefs about Dawkins fans ;)
HOLY SHIT
DERREN BROWN???? Who's next? Don't tell me PHILIP PULLMAN is in on this as well???
SD on 13/1/2007 at 13:40
Wow, you read the back cover my mind :o
I mention Brown because I'm positively certain OB is an admirer.
OnionBob on 13/1/2007 at 13:41
oh shit derren brown??? He can't be wrong about something.... HE MEMORISED THE ENTIRE A-Z I SAW IT ON CHANNEL 4 O_O
of course, the other thing about richard dawkins is that he shares strontium dog's complete misanthropic lack of understanding of how to talk to other human beings in a way that will generate anything other than a hardening of defences on either side, thus destroying the notion of "debate" in favour of "shit slinging" and permanently negating the possibility of any kind of useful outcome
SD on 13/1/2007 at 13:51
Yeah, we get the idea, you don't like me, I'm sure you have your reasons. But as per usual, the only person I see slinging shit is you. Please do actually get out of this thread, and let the discussion proceed in a civilised manner, as it was doing before you showed up.

If God/Yahweh does exist, a quick read of the Old Testament should be enough to convince anyone that God is a pretty evil entity.
music
the sun on my face
the wind in my hair
sex
food
love
colors
happiness
the amazing human body
babies
pets
language
and so on... All created by your "evil entity".

What i want to know is why do atheists always want to talk about God?
Generally we don't, but certain religous people often do, particularly in political, educational, or scientific contexts where the notion doesn't belong (I'm not too happy about the surprise pamphlet-attacks in the quad or the occasional Trojan horse Jehovah's witness magazine either), so I reckon I'm allowed a reasonable amount of anti-religion grumbling). I guess that's also why some of us try to prove that he can't actually exist (or if he does exist, he's untrustworthy or generally up to no good), the idea being to kill off the ridiculous arguments at the source. Obviously that doesn't work for people with sufficient faith (as faith is resistant to reason by definition) or people exploiting religion for their own benefit (who seldom actually believe what they're saying anyway) - those two groups tend to be the real trouble-makers. I'm quite happy for people to believe whatever they want, provided they keep it to themselves, or at least don't use it as an excuse or a reason to interfere with other people's lives.

Okay, fair enough, that's your belief. But what is it that convinces you that the world was created by the Abrahamic God Yahweh, and not Zeus, or Baal, or Odin, or Brahman? One might well say that we are both non-believers; I just go one deity further than you do.

boy it's a good thing God told us the right day to cut off the foreskins of infants otherwise we'd be pretty sunk (quote) addresses the hilariousness of the assertion that this passage is proof of the Bible's divine infallibility.
Vigil you're being a dick. As for male circumcision (which is the only kind referred to in the Bible) being a sign of God's wisdom-it seems to be rather useful as this article shows:
If it helps with bad shit like HIV, I'm sure it helps with other STD's as well.
As for this:
Quote:
(as faith is resistant to reason by definition)
Real faith is based on fact, the universe itself shows it was designed-and there is more solid historical evidence for the Bible than any other faith on the planet. Search for yourself and you will find many intelligent people have come to the same conclusion. Atheists who say there is no God and deny any supernatural world whatsoever are the oddballs, not people who understand that there is more to the universe than just what we can taste, feel and touch.
Flagston on 13/1/2007 at 14:41
Boy, I sure wish God had decided not to creat HIV and STD's and all that. Life sure would be better.
Of course he is only trying to punish homosexuals and other impure folks so I guess we should give him a pass.
And how can people honestly understand that there is more to the universe if we can't taste, feel or touch? Do we need to create wild theories or assumptions?
