boy it's a good thing God told us the right day to
cut off the foreskins of infants otherwise we'd be pretty sunk

One of the niceties about high infant mortality rates and high birth rates is you get to do a lot of circumcisions
addresses the hilariousness of the assertion that this passage is proof of the Bible's divine infallibility.
It doesn't take a prophet to figure out by trial and error when an (unnecessary and ultimately harmful) medical procedure has a higher risk of failure and death, any more than it takes a prophet to figure out that eating poorly-cooked pork is a recipe for food poisoning.

Indeed - to place the blame for things such as 9/11 on religion alone is far too simplistic.
Also ignoring the rather secular and highly popularised evils of communism and fascism.
edit: damn you vigil my post has NO CONTEXT now

What i want to know is why do atheists always want to talk about God?
They like to put God down and portray him as evil so that they can convince themselves there is no God and feel good about their denial.

Hey guys, the command to circumcise on the eighth day was given before any circumcisions were made. It wasn't deduced by trial and error.
Sorry I should have just added this to my previous post. Too late now.

Dawkins is far too simplistic; he asserts that all faith is blind faith when the Archbishop of Canterbury has publicly stated that he has doubted the existence of God. Dawkins does not have a clue about theology, and tbh why should he if he's such an atheist. Atheists should have nothing to do with God, instead of baiting and condemning people who do believe, whether it's in a world wide published book or on an internet forum.

oh shit god INVENTED circumcision too?
it's not as if you find it in many cultures around the world before Christianity came along, let alone Judaism (poorly phrased but I hope you know what I mean - it's not as if it's a solely Jewish thing)

Oh yeah that's right!
Because no pre-Judean cultures
ever practised circumcision.

many jewish traditions do seem to stem from tribal beliefs rather than from proper theology and philosophical debate

Pop-philosophy airport bookshop crap is still pop-philosophy airport bookshop crap for idiots with 2 second attention spans no matter how many irrelevant degrees and qualifications the author has to try to back up their reductive and childish posturing

[The God Delusion] is my favourite book of all time. I hope that those secure and intelligent enough to see the value of questioning their beliefs will be big and strong enough to read this book. It is a heroic and life-changing work.
Derren Brown isn't the sort of person I'd have marked down as an idiot with a 2 second attention span, nor (I suspect) would you. Hopefully you'll be secure and intelligent enough to see the value of questioning your beliefs about Dawkins fans ;)

If God/Yahweh does exist, a quick read of the Old Testament should be enough to convince anyone that God is a pretty evil entity.

What exactly is the difference between tribal beliefs and "proper" theology?
