I have great memories of playing Pilotwings when the N64 came out, and since then, nothing (except for a 3DS version, but I'm not really into handheld stuff).
.
THIS THIS Pilotwings was an amazing thing

While I think Arkane has been seriously delivering the goods with their Deus Ex-alikes and System-Shock-2-alike I miss the first 2 Thief games. I also miss stuff like Thief, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex coming out and being unlike anything I'd ever played before. Someone needs to do an immersive first person game with that level of simulation and depth and mystery but without being an homage to something that came before.
I also miss the days when we had proper racing simulators (I'm talking the stuff Papyrus, Crammond, and, as much as I dislike them, ISI made) that actually licensed a real-life racing series with the full set of rules/cars/drivers/tracks but didn't compromise on the sim-side of things. Grand Prix Legends, Indycar Racing, NASCAR Racing 2003, Grand Prix 4, GT Legends, GTR 2, etc. I wish it were possible for someone to license, say, the Assetto Corsa engine or the iRacing engine and then use it to make a WEC sim or a Blancpain GT sim or a 1991 IMSA Camel GT sim or a 1977 F1 sim or something. The content selection in modern racing sims is almost universally horrible and nonsensical.
This is a man that knows exactly what he is talking about. Couldn't agree more. I still remember playing GPL, GTR2... :'(

PigLick, do you remember the name of that Morrowind/Ultima fan project? I know of a few but didn't know that anything playable had been released.
I'm wondering to what extent an Ultima with the qualities I mentioned would be feasible in full 3D. The isometric worlds of U6 and U7 felt huge, but in 3D they might come across as rather small and theme park-like - and I'm not sure if anyone would be able to pull off a world with schedules, day/night cycles and mostly unique NPCs with personalities and individual schedules if the world had to be bigger. I'd love to see someone (like Obsidian, for instance) take a crack at it, though.
I never tried Gothic, mainly because I'm a bit bigoted when it comes to German games. Most of the ones I've played felt like nice tries by developers with tin ears.
A proper successor to Stalker would be much appreciated. I never really got into Metro.

This would be awesome. I'm a huge fan of the Stalker games and after Call of Pripyat the formula felt so close to a breakthrough for the genre. It perfectly illustrates what I mean about deep world building and lore without story getting in the way.

Open world survival games have never been more popular, so there's no better time. GSC Game World were trying to find their feet again with Cossacks 3, but I don't think it sold very well. It seems to be a flawed remake of Cossacks 1. No idea whether we'll ever see another Stalker, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you ever get a VR headset, make sure to give Ultrawings a go. I've never played Pilotwings, but it frequently gets compared to it. Very fun flying game, anyway.

* Space Flight sims. Highly popular in the 80s - early 2000s. I loved these. More so with good FMV :). I know there's Elite, but that's strictly multiplayer.
Pretty sure Elite has single player as well, but even in online play I rarely notice any other players. Sure, around stations you might spot the occasional other human player, but everyone mostly keeps to themselves. But if it's something more combat-focused with a more focused narrative you're after, you might wanna give House of the Dying Sun or Strike Suit Zero a whirl.

You should, it's awesome.
I'm replaying the series at the moment, and just made (

I was thinking this myself. I've seen it mentioned occasionally that space sims seemed to be dying out, though honestly I've never tried researching just how much truth there is to that claim.

I was going to say sims in general. I played a bit of the Janes Longbow sim, but really what I miss are the sci fi sim games. Mech Warrior 2, Heavy Gear, Tie Fighter, Freespace, Star Crusader etc.
I reaaaaally miss being able to play my ATI Rage version of Mechwarrior 2. My parents still have the old Aptiva Pentium 133 MHz in their basement somewhere.

It's such a shame that now that we've got machines that could depict Star Wars space battles at high fidelity, all the actual space dogfighting we get in Star Wars games is simple action fare, even though it does look gorgeous. If we could have an actual X-Wing and TIE Fighter remade in, say, the Frostbite engine, that would be massively cool. Doubly so with a HOTAS, triply so in VR.
