The Future. Of Deus Ex. - by King Ronald

I think what got me the most about Hong Kong was the music. Everywhere I wnet there it was. Maggie Chows, Apartment? Yep, Versa-Life? Yep, the Compound? Yep, The Lucky Money, Uh-huh. Damn, EVERYWHERE. And i think part of it was Hong-Kong was the area i did A LOT of wondering around in. Even more than Hells kitchen. I'd have to say my FAVORITE missions, are the Gas Station and the Vandenberg Airforce Base. Oh and the ocean lab. Those were REALLY good ones. Area 51 wasn't GREAT, but it was pretty good. But in anycase, if theres a lot of variety in the textures used in DX2, I'll be a Happy Guy!

One thing I really liked was riding the elevator down and stepping out into the Wanchai market. It just felt so.......different after the New York missions. It really felt as if I'd travelled a long way, and was in a completely different place. With the Gamma turned down, and at high resolutions the neon billboards, market stalls and towering skyscrapers conspired to give one of the most realistic areas of Deus Ex. It really had a character, (even with the voice acting, ahem) far more so than France or the towering concrete square that was meant to represent New York.

I also had that feeling. The MJ12 Helibase was still rather similar to the other MJ12 bases. The first glimpse of HK was from the roof of the helipad. But when the lift doors opened with totally new music, a really crowded atmosphere and comepletely new textures, it was really intoxicating. It was like walking into another world.

I have to say that I think the team are doing the right thing by making a smaller game that has like 4 times as much plot, triggers and changing stuff than before. I loved walking around Hong Kong, which I think I am right in saying was the biggest "Connected" set of levels in the game. There were so many possibilities, from declaring war on the Chinese Police, to fighting drug dealers in the alleyways, to strolling around the market talking to people, to having a drink in one of several bars and have a discussion on things like Olaf Stapleton, the Triad mafia gangs and the nature of human freedom in a controlled democratic state. I wouldn't have minded if the game didn't leave Hong Kong after that (I always thought France and the Ocean Liner levels were superfluous) as long as it was 10 times bigger and more detailed.
Or am I just insane?

Insane. :cheeky:
Personally, I hated HK... it was too big for me. I'm probably the completely unusual gamer, but I prefer having a more or less linear level... I loved AvP2, for example. You knew where to go, everything was fine. (I love it for various other reasons as well, but that's not the point )
I hate levels where you have to walk for ten minutes to get from one place to another. I play my games for fun, and not to walk through some place... no fun for me.

Fair enough, that's your personal style of play.
However, perhaps you can see some benefits from having one big place, with lots going on, than lots of little places, where only one or two things happens each place.
Dragonclaw on 23/7/2002 at 18:55
Yes, mainly interactions/reactions on player actions. However, there are also some disadvantages on hand, coming to mind: Same style of levels. Same general feeling: See HK for example: It's always asian (who had guessed). If you count out Versalife, it's always the same music, similar texturing, and so on.

I hope they ease off the repetitive 'find this man' objective we constantly got. Tong, Dowd, Everret, Savage, Nicolette DuClare, it got boring after a while.
santaClaws on 24/7/2002 at 06:38
Come on, King Ronald, we're talking about reasonable possibilities here. Or did you ever happen to turn into a brick?

maybe they'll implement the actual game time style for some missions, meaning you only have the time to catch some of the several events happening in real time at several different places, creating more replay value for thenext games.
just an idea, even if poorly said. :X
