So Lars seemingly got drunk at Cannes, and made a rambling statement in which he declares some empathy for 'ol Giddy Addie Hitler. (

What a bunch of
fucks for condemning the man's words, then banning him from the festival.
How can an organization that supposedly stands for, "... freedom of expression and creation," then turn around and declare what is acceptable?
Quote:
... Lars von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the festival.
Isn't this a double-standard by deciding what should be acceptable speech (which is still, as far I know, a form of expression)?! Wouldn't they in turn welcome a film in which, over the course of 90 minutes, Hitler and Errol Flynn get ass raped by a chortling Herschel Krustofski, and declare it profound art protected under the freedom of expression?
Is it just me, or has this P.C. bullshit, and the fact that people are just too goddamn touchy for what one says, gone too far for too long?

Wow, you noticed?

Erm no, thats not why its an inconsistency.
The reason why its an inconsistency is because they appear to have no issue with statements that support a certain Marxist dictator who has a body count that dwarfs Hitlers.

Have these people never heard of Godwin's law? This is like the oldest troll in the book, and von Trier is the troll king of film-making. Then you booze him up a little... Whatever, these festivals are ridiculous; von Trier is ridiculous ... So the absurdity of the whole thing deserves itself.

What demagogue said. Seriously, this is a textbook case.

The festival "provides artists from around the world with an exceptional forum to present their works and defend freedom of expression and creation," the statement said. The board "profoundly regrets that this forum has been used by Lars von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the festival."
We wholeheartedly endorse freedom of expression here. Just make damn sure not to say anything we won't approve of, or you're gone.

That interview was hilarious . "how do I get out of this sentence? Ok, I'm a Nazi"
It is a worry that people can't see it was all some stupid joke about his escalating discomfort. You'd think festival types would know him well enough by now.
PeeperStorm on 19/5/2011 at 17:17
That does it! I'm never attending Cannes again. That'll teach them.
Incidentally, that link gives a "no such article" error now.

Now that the hangover has worn off, my question is:
Do you think those who run Cannes - regardless of any personal opinions about von Trier - were in the right or were in the wrong for his expulsion, especially considering their own statement concerning freedom of expression?
SubJeff on 19/5/2011 at 22:59
I don't know about them being right in this case but this whole freedom of expression thing is a smokescreen/tangent. Of course someone could say something that is considered offensive, regardless of whether freedom of expression is allowed. You seem to have some misguided notion that freedom of expression = I can say whatever I like. Shitcock.
