Quicktime frowns at you.

This could arguably make the PS3 even more desirable. The PS2 backwards compatibility is already a bonus and Blu-Ray even more so.
Sony valued PS2 back compat. so much that it's been removed from the 40GB SKU, the only model on sale in Europe/Australasia at the moment. It still has PS1 game playback though.

Bzzzt. Wrong. Its one of 2 models available.
I bought the 80gb model with backwards compatibility here in Australia. To be perfectly honest though, when ps2 emulators get a little better (currently you can only play Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts and a few others in full speed without gfx glitches) I wont be using the ps3 for ps2 games at all, since you get gfx glitches in some games. It`ll be emulators all the way for me, just as it has for ps1 games. Plus you can play burned games in emulators incomparison to the ps3 or my chipped ps2.

Hmm, well, the difference between a regular DVD and a high definition DVD is pretty apparent to me on a 50" plasma screen TV.
From what I've read that's the
minimum size of screen required to tell the difference.
This industry-wide rush to HD strikes me as being an end-run around DVD piracy. I'm personally content with current DVD quality and if they think I'm upgrading my entire library to HD within the next ten years they're crazy.
On the other hand, TV resolution has been crap for a long time and it's about time it got better. At current prices it'll be a while before I upgrade that, though.

The 80 Gig model was discontinued, it was origionally released, but the next generation of a larger model is still awaiting release here. So Bzzzt. or something to that effect, I guess...

You really don't need that big of a hard drive. The 40 gig model already has 3 times the capacity of a regular Xbox, and you don't use the harddrive for much. I'd say get the cheaper model and if you -really- want to, stick a new drive in it. Don't bother with backwards compatibility, I hear it doesn't work well and who cares anyway? I still have a PS2 lying around for older games. I've never once played Xbox games on my 360, and I don't intend to do the same with the PS3 either. I think they did themselves a disservice by making that uber expensive 80 gig model anyway, it made people feel as if they were getting the cop-out version if they got the other, more reasonably priced one, which isn't true.
Oh well, I'm glad blu-ray won. And I don't blame you for not seeing a huge difference in blu-ray movies, because depending on the movie sometimes the difference isn't that huge. Don't use an older movie as a good comparison. The best looking movie I've seen so far was Pirates 3. You can see every damn pore on his skin in the scene where Jack is talking to himself. If you want to see why blu-ray is worth it, go find a Bravia display somewhere at a Best Buy playing blu-ray movies. And yeah, certainly if you don't have one of these next gen tv's it's not worth it for you, but that's a bit obvious innit?

Didn't Microsoft say it would consider switching to Blu-ray if it turned out to be the better product (which it clearly has)?

People who don't have a PS2 and would like to also play some PS2 games of course. Backwards compatibilty is always a good thing.

HD movies are like games: when you're running through the urban jungles in a game, motion blur overlay giving you the sense of super fast speed, you want to be able to see every detail in that normal-mapped alpha-channeled drain pipe blown out with too much bloom that someone spent $1,00,000 of budget working on because then you feel like you're
there, man.
