The Fighting TTLGers present: Arma 3 (a TTLG Coop Saturdays spin-off) - by Thirith

Whenever I play with Malf, Henke and Thirith I feel like they are doing all the heavy lifting and I just run around like a headless chicken. I have a lot of experience with arma2 but not so much with 3. Not that I dont enjoy it, tis great fun and arma3 is a very pretty looking open world style sim. Maybe I should go support/medic roles.

Nah, don't worry about it PigLick, I feel completely useless most of the time too. I struggle to even see the enemy a lot of the time, and while it's more realistic, I find the lack of damage feedback when you fire at an enemy to be disconcerting.
I'm only really at home when blowing stuff up or healing fallen buddies.

I've got my personal laptop with me this week. Hopefully I can complete the download and get acclimated with the campaign a bit. It's nice to have a computer that can actually run the game.

I'm assuming we're going to eventually add this to our play list:

17 multiplayer missions, apparently. I did a short bit of the first campaign mission and was pretty impressed with how massive and detailed the terrain is.

I’m definitely going to check it out. How many players are the coop missions designed for? That’s the main problem with our sessions: I’ve got about 500 missions downloaded, but once you subtract the ones broken by updates, you don’t have all that many that work for 4-6 people. The more we are, the wider the range to choose from, but missions for 10+ people usually don’t particularly work if you’ve got 4-5 people playing. I’m hoping we’ll manage a few sessions where we can play missions that have different teams and roles, e.g. a small unit on the ground and a chopper providing Close Air Support.

Okay, next session is planned for Saturday in a week. I'll send around a bunch of Steam PMs over the weekend.

Has there ever been a game where the ridiculous and the sublime were this close to each other?
Tonight's session started badly, with a mission called Data Fish, but basically it should've just been called Shitty Meatgrinder Mission. We started as scuba units on a small rock about 100m away from an island where there were two enemy camps that we were supposed to check out to find some intel. Except the moment we moved even slightly, the units on the other island saw us and opened fire, so some of us already died on that stupid rock. Some of us managed to board the submarine that had dropped us off there, but in the end it was just Malf and myself, trying to avenge our fallen mates and dying on that island after taking out 2-3 enemies.
It got better with a mission called Operation Fairyfire - not least because the mission allowed for respawn. (I don't mind Arma missions that don't have respawn, but only if the missions are relatively fair.) Chances are that the mission balancing had been screwed up a bit, because we were supposed to take out three massive missile launchers without any proper explosives. I had an AT launcher, but that took three rounds to take out one of the missile launchers, and I spawned with no more than two rounds... :-/ Nonetheless, the mission was a distinct improvement on the first one, not least because the enemy had forgotten to lock their vehicles, so we pootled around in big, mobile platforms of death.
We finally ended on Slow and Steady, a mission we'd done before that tasked us with clearing out a building site. After a quickly aborted first attempt where the enemy decimated us very quickly, we split up on a second approach under Jeshibu's expert command and started picking off bad guys we could see through the windows. I admit that I put five or six rounds in Malf when he suddenly came out of the enemy-infested building (I still think that was a bit suspicious, really...), but we did okay. Well, if 'okay' includes several of us clipping through the floor. I think Jason got it worst, because he died down there, underneath the building floor, unable to move, but at least he went out looking at our crotches. There's always that.
After a while we were convinced that we'd taken out all the enemies, but when the mission wouldn't end Ghost Jason informed us that there were a couple of bad guys in a part of the ground floor that wasn't actually accessible. (Arma 3, ladies and gents.) We tried shooting through the walls, we tried grenading the wooden plans behind which we knew the enemy was hiding, but nothing worked - until Malf, who was trying to drag and heal one of his fallen comrades, suddenly realised that as he was moving his mouse the whole building was moving around him - or perhaps it was us who realised it, as walls and floors and ceilings spun around us... and through us. I think Malf may have killed each and every one of us, but his X-Men-worthy trick also killed the bad guys, so it was totally worth it. Malf's mutant powers won the mission. Hooray!
It is frustrating that while there are many player-made missions out there, you never know if any of them have been broken beyond repair by one of the updates Bohemia have done since the game launched. Sometimes we play 2-3 missions in a row that are mediocre at best and sometimes downright unfair. But sometimes the game still shines, especially with people like tonight's crowd (thanks to henke, Malf, Jeshibu, Dema, Jason and Piglick!), and sometimes it shines most when it's the most broken.

And before I forget: I'm hoping to run another game in two weeks.
