The tone is pretty much all wrong for Star Trek (we'll sky dive from orbit! AND HAVE A SWORD FIGHT WHEN WE LAND!)
Is it just me, or is this
actually entirely the right tone for the original Star Trek?
Kirk didn't just sit around all day pontificating on philosophy and diplomacy. That came with TNG and the other spinoffs.

Star Trek 5 was far worse than Nemesis.
Trek 5 is much better than its reputation would make you think. Sure, it's got awkward moments a-plenty, and it's not a good movie, but compared to that turd of Nemesis which was so embarrassingly bad one has to wonder how it ever got made, it's quite alright.
Of this new one I agree with Morte. What. The. Shit. JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK, Fast and Furious. Give me a friggin' break.
But regarding that whole trailer - based on that, you can't really draw any conclusions. It's obviously only meant to show the briefest of glimpses into what the new Trek will look like, and isn't even meant to give you an idea of the plot. It's just a montage or pictures edited together with quick cuts - you can't even call what you're seeing scenes, save for a couple.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just that you can't really say anything about the movie based on that. It looks pretty good. It could be good. I hope it'll be good. Trek, at its best, was really, really good. Unfortunately, it just wasn't at its best very often.

Yes, yes it is.
Raven - one doesn't need to go reading wiki pages at all. The probe came to do a routine communication with the whales. It wasn't "hearing" them across space - it was trying to "talk" to the whales from orbit. What is your malfunction?
Aja, showing himself with special gestures every day.

You're an idiot. I mean, I know I've pointed this out before, but if anything begs for a reminder, this is it.
I ask that everyone please forgive me for not putting the usual flair into this observation, but good god, he's used up all my material.
I'm with Aja here, not because of Wesley Crusher particularly but because the ensemble in TNG was just a bit more characterful and lively. When I think of Star Trek (and I spent a considerable time in my youth watching it), I think first of Picard, Riker, Data, Beverley Crusher, Deanna, Worf, Geordie... they just embody a certain sense of optimism somehow. Sisko? Odo? Quark? Julian fucking Bashir? They're alright, but it just doesn't win. I loved Dax.
Anyway when I watch it now I can really appreciate the failings I didn't care about or notice so much when I was younger. Just makes me feel nostalgic.
Oh yeah, and I was dissapointed that they got Nimoy to read Shatner's old opening lines for this. Shatner claims he was never approached about the film, despite JJ Abrams saying he declined. Mind you, Shatner also thinks George Takei (currently denigrating himself on I'm a Celebrity... on UK tv) has some sort of deep-seated pathological envy of him, so who knows.

Who didn't?
swoonOn topic though, I agree entirely, DS9 is like a cold war type ST that feels a bit too caught up in the drudgery and reality of its place in time and space to actually have as much fun as TNG (and any fun had to come from
Oh look, Quark and Odo are arguing! Hah, the doctor's being a tool! Yay, a new holographic farce!). And while Fringe is bang on that TNG created the philosophical captain mold I must say it's a tad preferable, to me anyway, to have a captain that actually judges the ramifications of his actions rather than a captain who's essentially like a James Bond of space.
All that said, I'm not above stuff blowing up cool like.

Decidedly 'meh' on what I've seen so far. The tone is pretty much all wrong for Star Trek (we'll sky dive from orbit! AND HAVE A SWORD FIGHT WHEN WE LAND!)
Interestingly enough, in one of the Shatner-penned Trek books, older Kirk basically does exactly that anyway. Also interesting: Shatner filmed an orbital skydiving scene for Generations, which was cut.

Since it hasn't been said already... DS9 mutated into a 'me too' rip-off of Babylon 5 around season 3 or 4.
RE: Nemesis vs. ST5. It's been a while since I've seen either film. ST5 plot really sticks out for me though... They travel to the centre of the universe, where they find GOD and proceed to blow him up with photon torpedoes!

Usually, I can at least understand where you're coming from, but I don't think I'm overdoing it here when I say that you need to be killed - preferably by a pack of fat kids with replica Bat'leths singing
YIjah, Qey' 'oH.
Hahaha this was like my biggest failure of self-referential humor ever!
A lot of you are still being awfully touchy about the trailer though. I don't particularly think "JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK" is really any goofier than "So you're all astronauts... on some sort of.. star trek" as far as trailers go. Star Trek movies have plenty of cheesy moments and if you expect this one to be different you're probably going to be dissapointed.

okay
let's try a different angle
This may be kind of like focusing on an undigested piece of ham nestled deep in a rotten dog turd, but name one thing in that trailer that didn't make you wince.

Given that JMS claims he tried to peddle Bab 5 to Paramount at the beginning and his later accusations of plagiarism, I'm not surprised at that view. Never did watch Bab 5 though.
