ppps ENOUGH WITH THE GODDAMNED TIME-TRAVEL THOUGH JESUS
Look on the bright side: having it set in the TOS time period meant they couldn't do "HOLODECK GOES EVIL" at any point...

In a movie called Star Trek I'm not expecting an accurate reflection on military or common-sense mannerisms. Clearly you were confused if thats what you expected going into this movie.
I wasn't expecting
"Michael Bay's Star Trek", that's for damn sure.

I disagree with that aswell. This was by no means on Bay's level - for one the chairs didnt explode for no reason.
We're arguing about STAR TREK for gods sake. Lets all just be thankful it didnt finish on a cliffhanger or with a shocking twist at the end.
And I was right about the Cloverfield monster being in it :cheeky:

This is a fantastic post. I was uncomfortable with the new look of the Enterprise from the start, and that eventually turned into genuinely disliking it in every way. But now looking at the two next to each other I genuinely dislike it even more if thats possible. The new one looks so... just ridiculous by comparison.
Also just because bits and pieces of Star Trek history are known to be somewhat silly does not mean that the new movies should have an excuse to have giant gaping logical holes in them. Time travel holes aside things like what ZB said about how unlikely it would be for Kirk to move up in rank so quickly shouldn't be defended by "Oh its Star Trek". Its still unrealistic and poor writing.

SPOILER AHEAD
Everyone knows that the design of the starship enterprise is a sacred thing that has not been changed throughout the life of the series and cannot be changed if we are to honor its vision.
Also I don't know maybe the complete loss of seven big ass ships left several thousand spots open for new kids to fill if you're already believing in aliens and time travel and nearly instant inter-galactical travel surely you can stretch your imagination that far. (I bet someone on this forum knows exactly how many crew those ships carry)

Sure. But from cadet straight to Captain sounds a bit of a ladder jump; an already commissioned officer could perhaps make that leap. There weren't enough lieutenants and commanders left lying around Starfleet?

Christ, it's a spaceship... why does it matter if a few superficial aesthetics change slightly? It's still a great big disc with a tube underneath with two wing things sticking out the side.

The already-existing officers had to go to the ships they're building to replace the ones that got trashed by Nero. The movie hinted enough at Kirk being a genius that it's not that surprising (plus his actual in-movie heroics(like saving the entire planet), plus his dad's heroics, plus Pike probably wanted him). A merit system isn't that hard to believe. And besides its clear from the series as a whole that the ships keep the same core crew for yeeears, and starfleet obviously likes to get them set in place while they're young so they have a lot of time to work together and gel as a team.
I don't even know jack about the star trek backstory or canon, I'm just making this up. But explanations like this are so freaking obvious that complaining about the lack of explanation just looks like whining.

Star Trek always did have a fair bit of Horatio Hornblower in it.

Yes, it is Star Trek and therefore extremely watered-down sci-fi, but it still has to preserve the willing suspension of disbelief. As far as I can tell, in the US Navy it takes about 15 years from comissioning to command of a capital ship, and that would be considered fast. Kirk's ascension from cadet to Captain- of the brand-new (but slightly black-holed)
Federation Flagship- is so utterly ludicrous it makes an extremely silly movie an incredibly silly movie. But, whatever; they have their Star Trek 90210 reboot and that's fine by me. As long as the next one has more shots of Uhura in her underwear and a better depiction of Green Orion Women I'll be content.
