How did 4 have a good story? I mean, it's Star Trek: The Motion Picture with Humpback whales and time travel. It's an enjoyable movie, but the plot doesn't make a lick of sense.
EDIT: While 5 is just a poor movie in its own right, I did enjoy just how dark some of the character moments were. Plus, I enjoyed its message of pain being an integral part of what makes a man; otherwise, you're just a mindless zombie.

I think I meant more like fun storytelling ... maybe. I actually wrote that just before I hit submit because it sounded good. I'm not sure myself exactly why I like it. I just like watching it.
It's the kind of movie I can watch over and over, as opposed to some others where, even though they're good, I wouldn't get into watching them again too soon ... you have to invest so much emotion or whatever. That makes me think 4's storytelling was good, despite the improbable, even hokey plot.

What
exactly about the plot didn't make sense?

How the hell would humpback whales communicate with races on the other side of the galaxy? Whale calls don't travel in space, you know? The whole "let's travel back in time to save the humpback whales in order to save the future" plot just seemed extremely contrived at best.

Ummm... the aliens in Voyage Home are
in orbit around Earth.

It's a (
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Whale_Probe) probe, not a spaceship.
Quote:
...quickly established that the probe's call was intended for the extinct cetacean species of humpback whale; Spock theorized that some other species had once been in contact with whales, and had sent the probe after the species went extinct to find out why they had lost contact.

I love the fourth movie (seriously, I memorized it when I was in grade school), but how are you going to hear whale calls from orbit?
There seems to be an implication that the whales create some kind of radio/subspace/fill-in-the-blank signal along with the sound waves, and that 20th century science can't detect it but those aliens sure can. It's never directly stated, though.

Or, the probe just has Sufficiently Advanced technology on board to detect whalesong. In a universe where it's taken for granted that you can scan an area for a specific species of alien, then beam them right through walls and reassemble them somewhere else, this is hardly a stretch.
Raven must not be much of a scifi reader if basic stuff like this trips him up.
