Saw this yesterday; thought it was very enjoyable and pretty exciting in places, but am going to echo previous criticism of it not adding all that much to the series long-term, the supporting cast being rather underused, and the plot (especially Nero) being rather dodgy. But the overall atmosphere was pretty good and although a lot of the references to the original series were played for laughs, it was still quite well captured (particularly Pine as Shatner in a few scenes).

Still, Star Trek should be more than just a flashy action movie. The market is already saturated with those. I expected more from the man behind LOST.
Or could it be that J.J.'s just some kind of "hired gun" in all this? Because honestly, they could have put Michael Bay in the director's chair and the end result may not have been much different.
This flick is more than an action movie and if Bay had directed it, we would've seen Cage & The Rock kicking Dennis Hopper's old butt.

Also: Abrams can capably direct action sequences. Anything other than car commercials puts Bay beyond his directing ability.

*More* than an action movie?

I saw this last night and was quite impressed. I thought they managed to script an alternate timeline film in a way that even non-fans would be comfortable with, sans technobabble. The film itself has, as noted, waaaaay too much lensflare and a few questionable situations (from cadet to captain in one fell swoop?) but on the whole was enjoyable, exciting and a vital shot in the arm for the franchise.

Okay, could someone please explain me why people keep referring to this film as the "saviour of Star Trek"? It's getting quite annoying.
Because, yeah, considering all the reruns and DVD/Blu-Ray releases, Star Trek was already well and alive. Heck, there were already plans for Star Trek 11 long before J.J. Abrams took the helm. Yeah, talk about a "dying" franchise...
Seems the best part about this flick is the marketing campaign after all.

I think it was the fact that there are is no current series (and Enterprise was fairly poorly received), and the last couple of films were pretty bad - Nemesis is just like an extended episode of TNG only with an older, fatter Data. And there was hardly any potential for a Voyager or DS9 movie.
But it is hard to see where this new film is going to lead - a sequel based on this timeline?

Yeah, oh lets award someone who hasnt even graduated from our equivelant of college the captaincy of not only a ship, but our flagship, with no experience.
No way johnny wolf, this film was by far the best of trek film of modern times. The next gen films sucked. This film was actually good.

That's a slander against episodes of TNG.
