gutless, tinny-sounding audio
coming from the front speakers only had my angry enough to hit somebody. A personal problem, I'll be the first to admit, but I'd rather not be robbed again.
Totally off-topic, but that's why I could never stand watching DVDs in 5.1 mode on my computer when I still had working 5.1 speakers - all the sound just came from that tiny, tinny front-centre speaker.
It might just be me, but I'd prefer to sacrifice the surround sound in order to actually have my speakers and woofer used.

Loved it. The villain was a bit weak and there were a few WTF scenes (Cloverfield on Ice??) but overall it was a very fun experience. As a reboot it's a success IMHO.

Haha yes I turned to my friend in the cinema and said the exact same thing at that point.
Loved it in general; the cinema in Leiscter Square was packed with geeks which made it all the more atmospheric - applauding when
Future Spock appears, laughing out loud at ever "old" phrase.
Afterwards I got into a heated debate about whether or not JJ Abrams can take any credit for it; or if he's just simply repackaged what we've seen before in a glitzy way. Maybe he has, but he's done a damn fine job of it.
I want to see it again.

TOOMANYFASTCUTS/CLOSEUPFOREXTRAINTENSE and sHAAKycAMEra
and omg nokia still makes phones in the 23rd century!
And the plot was mostly nonsense. BUT the casting was brilliant, and the acting too. The music sucked. Oh but the art direction was wonderful. So basically I liked it. But if it were my movie I'd have put in fewer chase sequences and more conversation parts. And more Scotty, overall. And I would definitely hire a new composer because the theme song was lame and the general score did not have nearly enough hints of other Star Trek music (see any of John Barry's Bond scores for a good example of proper theme-integration). The reviews so far are a little enthusiastic but man it could've been a lot worse. I expect great things from the sequels.

So has anyone watched it?
Karl Urban was perfect.
Say what you will about Star Trek, This movie destroys the "first" 3 starwars movies.. not that its difficult to do but this movie was great. I woudln't say perfect but I have to say it was actually worth the wait and then some.
unlike some other movies that came out this month.

Oh yeah, the Nokia placement is the only thing that really didn't belong. Although I would probably have let it pass had they used only the signature ringtone, having the giant NOKIA screen broke the immersion.
On the other hand it was during the already horrible teen-fast teen-furious scene, so it didn't disrupt any worthy scene. ;)
I'll probably go watch it again next week.

I think the young Kirk car chase scene should probably have been cut from the movie. It works well as a trailer to get you ready for the NEW STYLE J.J. Abrams Star Trek but in the movie it seemed entirely superfluous.

Welp, that was pretty rockin'

Saw it today. I didn't think it was bad, my complaints really boiled down to two things. The first is the shakycam. I don't know about anyone else, but when I see a movie that poured millions into special effects and CGI, I want to see the goddamn stuff without the camera making it impossible to tell what's going on. The second is the whole concept for the movie. I mean, it's a fairly standard evil-alien-threatens-earth sci-fi story, with time travel thrown in as a bonus. There really wasn't anything about it that made it stand out. It was an action movie, rather unlike the series.

As a long time Trek fan I liked it quite a bit. I don't think there was quite enough dialogue/genuinely interesting ideas, much more of an action movie than most of the previous Treks. But for the old fans, the moment when old Spock shows up was worth the price of admission. Though I did think that sequence felt a little contrived...the explanation for old Spock being on the planet made sense....but young Spock ejecting Kirk from the ship??? Really? That was necessary rather than throwing him in the brig?? AND scotty randomly being in the same place?? Really?? Maybe I missed something.
I suppose the major changes in the story line are a little strange to digest for longtime fans, but they opened up the door for a lot more new stuff to come so I guess thats good. Also Urban was just unbelievable. I wasn't expecting that from the same guy who was in the silly Doom movie, but I can't imagine anyone possibly doing the character any better other than DeForest himself. Pegg was also really good, but really everyone was very well cast and the acting was really solid. I also share the same sentiments that Nero felt a bit generic and underdeveloped, but it wasn't too bad. Hopefully in future installments we'll get the same frenetic and visceral action as well as some more interesting ideas and discussions.
