:erm:
Can someone tell me why techgoggles are so damn expensive? Is there some magic function they have that I've completely missed? There is a number of useless items in the game, but this one is by far the most expensive.
while we're at it... has anyone found any use for the following:
pepparspray gun - most enemies are... immune it seams.
Laser sight - does it increase accuracy? What is the point of a little red dot when you can aim with the cross.
Scope - Why can you scope the GEP gun but NOT the assault rifle?? Who needs a scope on an guided weapon? Why can't you scope a weapon that is excellent for snipering (correctly moded that is)?
Distortion grenades - Is there any situation in the game where a distortion grenade is better than the good ol' GEP:er? So far I've found one... but it's not worth the space it takes up.
and finally:
The throwing knives - why are they so rare? Nice weapon, would be nice to play as 100% lowtec but they are even harder to find then the plasma clips.

I agree with a lot of that, especially the tech goggles. Completely useless, doesn't increase lighting one bit, just turns everything to a green tint. Pepperspray works only if you're just about next to the person. It's (semi-)useful if you're playing non-lethal. I'd like to have seen more throwing knives too. They're fun to use even if you can't really aim with them. What's a distortion grenade??
There's a minor bug with the laser sight. If you have both laser sight and scope on a weapon, the laser sight is useless. If you have only the laser sight, the bullet (dart, whatever) will always hit the dot, regardless of how tight the crosshairs are.

If by "distortion grenade" you mean scramble grenade, I think they're a barrel of fun :D Get an enemy bot to go and shoot everything except you for a while. Or even scramble it then take it out with an assault shotgun or something - they won't shoot back until the scramble effect wears off.

They make a nice "click" sound when you drop them, and they don't shatter if you throw them off a building. Other than that, I've got no idea - it's not as if they even give you infravision, which is actually useful.

Breaking security beams without triggering an alarm, mostly. I guess you could use one for combat if you'd taken the pacifistic route, or you needed to keep someone off you so you could hit them with a baton or something.

Not that I've noticed, but it's not as if it does anything
bad, either (check out the behaviour of the laser sight in, say, (
http://ahl.action-web.net/) AHL).

Presumably, it's because the AR has a lot of recoil on it until you've either upgraded your rifle skill or put a few thousand credits worth of recoil suppresors into it, and even then it's got a fairly large cone of fire. It's only fairly late into the game - with maxed-out rifle skills and a load of accuracy mods - that I've been able to reliably hit targets with full-auto fire from more than fifty-ish yards.

Because you've got to (at least on lower heavy-weapon skill levels) paint the target for a few seconds to get a lock, which can be a pain when they're a few pixels in size on screen and moving. I've only ever used a GEP gun on the LaGuardia airport level, and only because it was there and I had a bunch of GEP rockets saved up.

EMP or scrambler? EMPs are useful for confusing turrets and cameras, enabling you to get past them (if you don't want to waste a sniper rifle or HE round to actually destroy them), and scramblers are useful to get past groups of bots... especially those two patrolling the tunnel just before the entrance to the helibase.
By the sound of things, you're playing the game like it's a rockets-only match of UT, so it's hardly surprising that a lot of these gadgets aren't of much use to you.

I've got no idea. There's that bunch on the dead NSF terrorist in Jaime Reyes' office after the first mission, then twenty or so more in Hong Kong, and then none for the rest of the game. *shrugs*

The laser sight does increase the weapon's accuracy stat, but IIRC if you also add a scope, it cancels the laser bonus. An unfortunate bug.
The most useful spot I've found for the scramble grenades is when you're trying to get out of Hell's Kitchen after the MiBs come after you. Great for getting the medium bots to clear out the swarms of UNATCO troops. Oh, and when you first pop out of the Paris sewers, scrambling the large bot can wipe out most of the MJ12 troops in the area, and weaken or destroy the other large bot.
The most FUN spot for a scramble grenade is at the start of the Ocean Lab level. Scrambling the first large bot there will cause it to start firing rockets at the seagulls overhead. It usually misses, but occasionally you'll get flaming bird corpses plummeting to the ground.
FluffigtDjur on 3/10/2004 at 20:20
LOL the seagull thing actually sounds worth the trouble... but anyway, if you're not going for a completely maxed melee char then you almost always spend some points in heavy. In other words, one or possibly two rockets can take out any bot. I agree with you guys that making bots attack soldiers is fun but they tend to attack OTHER bots instead... and that's pretty useless since they rarely manage to kill one another.
Moving one: am I the only one that likes to go sniper with the assault rifle? It goes up to 100% accuracy pretty fast and can take out almost anything with a few taps in the head... and it's silenced just like the pure sniper rifle(which doesn't really work either sadly).
I just think it's a little frustrating that they added all these, for lack of better word, groovy mods and few are actually worth the trouble. What baffles me is that laser sight and scope, two of the most useless mods (unless you use the crossbow) are treated by the game as if they were rare collectibles... same with the goggles, if they had long distance scanners I would understand but now they are just a bad version of the light aug.
finally about the pepper spray: I stood right in front of a NSF trooper and sprayed like crazy and he just laughed it off... was it the fact that he had goggles that made the difference? Is the game THAT realistic all of a sudden?
The reason I'm going on about this is cause I got a little inspired by the "laser rapier only" campaigns going on in the SS2 section... a pepper spray only game would be damn funny IF it actually works. Then again ninja style using only knives and lowtech swords would be fun... if you can get some knifes to take out those snipers.
oh, and Mark... why the hell are you talking about cheats?
DaBeast on 3/10/2004 at 21:08
The tech goggles should only be used when there is no light, like on liberty island in the sunken boat, but you can use flares or the light aug. So they are kind of pointless.
Scrambler nades are useful when playing on the harder difficulty levels.
I used the laser sight on the stealth pistol. Very handy for Realistic mode. Also, the pepper spray can come in handy if you are being chased(and playing pacifest). Hide round a corner, ready the spraygun, listen for footsteps, the guy should choke giving you time to whip out a knive or baton.
FluffigtDjur on 3/10/2004 at 22:09
I've finished realistic without any problems at all... and I sure didn't use any scramblers except once for fun... and the pistol is useless... why use a pistol when you can use the a-rifle? Or if you don't mind the alarm (it sort of kills the realism running around and not caring about the alarm) the a-shotgun is always your friend.
Perhaps I'll try the corner trick... but as I said, most enemies seems to be immune. Besides you should be able to give them a good one without the pepper spray if you jump out from a corner.
Speaking of rarely used items and skills, do you guys now if a combo of invisibility and silenced walk augs will give you the ability to take out masses of troops without being detected? I'm think I will go for a melee only game but I need to know if I should go for running silent or running really really fast... if I can't take out more than one enemy at a time I'm doomed. Our German friend will also be one hell of a problem without a GEP
EDDIego on 14/10/2004 at 03:34
I don`t see why bothering with rifles or shotgun when a pistol can do the trick. Far more accurate (at least in my hands) then a non-highend rifle/shotgun. As you said in another post: loosing a few legs is not a big problem for Mr."my vision is augmented" Denton. He`s tough enough, even with only 1 lam and 14 bullets against Gunther :cheeky: .
No gep-gun for your german friend? Well, you`re the one loving the a-rifle, why not switch it to HE?
