Agreed. Organized religions are stupid. I say this as a proud hedonist, pure and simple (maybe a touch of a Pagan there though). Rampant consumerism is my only religion :D. And at this moment the only thing I want is a shiny new iPad! Also, all this talk of concealed femininity is getting me horny :p but that's for later.

Know what you mean, the only thing that really offends me is an empty fridge.

That was a good article Scots, specially the bit at the end -

hijab can properly be seen as an aspect of youth culture, characterized by rebellion against branded clothes and the fashion industry

If burqas and hijabs were a sign of liberated women, why are women in muslim countries not liberated?
The young muslimas choosing to wear them voluntarily in western countries are re-assigning these symbols in a western cultural context. That would be fine, the reasons are quite understandable, but they should recognise the fact that it's the same western culture that allows them to do so. Instead, in the same move they're trying to re-interpret and defend an embarrassingly backwards religion/culture and make it compatible with their modern lives.
Finally it seems to me that a fair bit of back-slapping and clever-dicking aimed at western women ("No, you let yourselves be oppressed!") goes along with this. Which makes it an offensive statement once again. It's a long way to enlightenment.

And thinking about this a bit longer:
Veiling yourself because of a predatory environment isn't empowerment, whichever way you look at it.

I think we should stay clear out of this, we cannot know when a girl wears it voluntary, if she is forced to wear it she will say the exact same thing anyway. Let's just leave it at fashion for whatever reason. But quid pro quo, don't ask anything from me, I will not hire a veiled girl, and that is absolutely discrimination and I don't care, I just don't like it. They their veil, me my right to exclude.

Fragony, he's talking there about the article Scotts Taffer linked. Go and read it.
The thing that the writer of that piece didn't get (or didn't want to address) was that there was a long fight over the women's right to wear what they damn well want (eg not being arrested for wearing trousers) without people using it as justification for whatever bullshit they want to try - and for her to say "Oho! Wear the hijab and stop being slutty, and you won't be attacked!" is outright offensive. Victim blaming much?

I am not really a big fan of the Islam as some might know, but this is the downside of having a free society, some get lost in it. I feel sorry for these girls but we can't help them, they will have to do it on their own. I am much more concerned about people who try to buy a single day by giving in to the radical Islam's more edgy concepts, muslims are mostly inward but multiculti's want to make them a part of their multiculturalist utopia. They don't to come to their parties, they should get over it.
edit: it usually aren't the muslims making the demands by the way, multiculturalists tend to know what muslims want even before muslims realize they want it. It is not their fault.
