My problem with the full veil is that it removes a critical part of human communication. I mean, we've spent hundreds of thousands of years developing brains that are massively keyed to facial recognition, and are capable of divining a host of diverse signals from the tiniest, tiniest facial cues, and then they go and stick a fucking mask in front of it.
Thats the point of the veil: it makes effective social interaction difficult.

Time for a game!
What is the most likely result of a veil ban:
1) fundie muslim men everywhere will see the error of their ways and fall on their knees in shame, and muslim women who have been wearing veils all their lives will suddenly shed them and become open, communicative members of society
OR
2) fundie muslim men will forbid their wives from going out in public at all, and if they do let them out, the women will feel embarrassed and awkward because its been 30 goddamn years since non-family saw their faces and so will try to avoid it anyways
PLACE YOUR BETS
(edit: for bonus points, how many recruits will extremist muslim groups get after they use the ban to stir up anger at the fact that whitey won't even let them practice their religion?)

Solution: make the fundie men stay at home wearing a gag.

So if it's okay for Muslims, why can't I walk around wearing my Bill Clinton mask in public :grr:. You gotta have a legitimate, religious reason you say? What if I feel more comfortable with a rubber mask on? Maybe I'm one ugly bastard and I don't like it when people stare at me too much. Why isn't public mask wearing not within my rights while it is within that of Muslim women? How do we even know that it's a woman under there or even a Muslim. Maybe it's really some creepy guy disguised as a Muslim woman under that burqa. Don't tell me that such possibilities don't make you even slightly paranoid .

Only paranoid enough to keep a fully loaded shotgun within ten paces at all times.
So yeah, slightly.

I think you'll find you're entitled to wear a mask in public. I also think you're not going to get much traction with "how do we know they are Muslim" and "what if it's a man under there" - why shouldn't non-muslims and men be allowed to veil themselves in the unlikely event they want to?
...but then, you're not about to engage in rational discourse, or you'd have answered Starfall's question.

Why give a crap, I don't want any walking tents here, this is the Netherlands not Backwardstan. I am against a ban (no ban here) it's silly, but I won't deny being offended by a woman being all covered up, as if I couldn't control myself if I saw her inbred face. A veil fine, but a tent, well it isn't anything to me but I don't like it at all and I think they don't belong in a modern society.

I think hijabs can be quite nice-looking, but burqas are ridiculous and awful (except (

And, in fact, I think it'd be best for everyone if ALL organized religion dropped off the face of the planet and took its most ardent followers with it. But that's not really a good enough reason to take it away from those who choose to follow.
