While their cause is legit (veils absolutely HAVE to be banned, and why should Muslims be given a free ticket to walk all over the values/laws of their adoptive countries?), I must agree that their presentation is faulty. I'm no skinhead for thinking that if you bloody live in a CIVILIZED European nation, you should abide by European/Western values. So treating women like second-class citizens (forcing them to wear black blankets in the middle of July is not very respectful towards them, is it now?) should not be allowed. England is not Saudi Arabia for God's sake and if you don't like it then I suggest you move somewhere with more sand.

Plenty of sand where I live :erm:

This is not what's happening in the UK.
More and more young girls are choosing to wear veils.
The younger generations are becoming more militant and strict than the older generations.
Obviously this is generalising but it does seem to be the case.
And I find the whole tone of your post distasteful and ignorant.
These are citizens of their countries born and bred and have the right to do what they want within the framework of that country.
Like what they do or not but the whole point of being civilised as you put it, is to allow freedom.
Even if it's as I said in my first post, the people you are allowing those freedoms are using them to fight against them.

I dunno, man... A non-political, multi-cultural organisation setting up peaceful protests against an oppressive and extremist manifestation of a religious group? Sounds great on paper. But I'm a little skeptical with regards to the degree all that makes it in when translated into practice.

I think calling it "English" is already a little divisive, it should be about Britain if anything.
Well, it looks like they're not using the term "English" with intent to represent the whole of the UK, but yeah, it does look like a curious division.

No need if you decide to treat it in the same way as wearing a hockey-mask. Current laws are fine no need to ban it., just apply the law, but there is where everything goes wrong; the UK's suffocating culture of political correctness.

Having watched that Newsnight report, I think the EDL seems like a bad thing. Balaclavas? No thanks? Burning Swastikas to prove you're not Nazis? This isn't the way we have to do business.
ZergMasterBaiter on 27/1/2010 at 20:22
Yes and what will they "choose" next? Erecting a dozen minarets all over London because it's within their rights? How would you like to have some immam bastard wake you at six in the morning with his amplified chanting, just calling the faithful to prayer you know, it's within his rights I'm sure. It's bound to happen in cities all over Europe if things continue as they are (I respect the Swiss for not being blind and taking action on that front). But seriously you don't really have a say on this topic. Are there even Muslims on Arran? And EDL is a bad idea, I must agree. But I don't see anything wrong with having referendums on topics like banning veils or burkas or minarets. Its what they call democracy.

And did you read (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8250017.stm) this article as well Fingernail?
And the the front page of that site, latest news is headed up by the fact some 13 year old with a Pakistani name raped a 20 yr old white girl.
I mean what? What relevance has that got?
If some kid's a nutter he's a nutter, the colour of his skin's got bugger all to do with it.
I'm sorry? I have no say? Someone from Montreal is saying I have no say about the UK?
And let me assure you that Glasgow and Edinburgh (were I spend part of my time) have very large muslim communities and a fair few mosques.
Banning items of clothing?
Shut the fuck up fool.
Edit: And we have planning laws which are more than adequate to decide what gets built where.
