We're all pretty clear that this is completely and over-the-top deliberate tongue-in-cheek on a scale comparable to the Evil Dead movies, rite? Reading it in Bruce Campbell's voice makes it all perfectly awesome.

Except for the "deliberate tongue-in-cheek" part, yes.

How can anyone not see that the Doom comic is massively tongue-in-cheek? It's not very subtle in this respect, and it feels like the same joke told 20 times in a row, but it's obvious that this is not meant seriously in any way. Or at least it should be. The only way you could make the irony clearer would be to add a ;-) LOL!!!!!! after every speech bubble.

I'm pretty sure the doom comic came with the ID game collection that was released about 12 years ago in the UK at least.
At least it has pictures, which is more than can be said about the doom novels which I'm sure I have a copy lying around somewhere.

I think you are mistaking your enjoyment of the comic as the writers' intention.

"Hail to the chief" and "Groovy" made me cringe.

Indeed.

I very much doubt it, because my enjoyment went something like this: 1st page - "Heh." 2nd page - *giggle* 3rd page - "Didn't we pretty much have this joke on the first two pages?" 4th page - *yawn* 5th page - *yawn*
But look at it again: the whole thing is so clearly in the Evil Dead vein. Is it subtle humour? No. Is it fun humour? That's a matter of taste. But I honestly don't think they could have made their humorous intention any more clear without saying on every page, "This is tongue in cheek."

I've read it twice now, and I just don't see it. Just because it's bad doesn't make it parody. Just because you (or AR Master) can't imagine writing something like this with sincerity doesn't mean it wasn't. I've apparently read a lot more shitty comics than you guys.
I do think that the writers were semi-aware that something else was stirring just under the hood of their game-to-comic adaptation, but they didn't entirely know what to do with it other than let it bubble up for a couple self-aware moments (such as the heart-eyed BFG scene).
Besides, the comic is really only successful if taken as failed sincerity. It's spectacularly entertaining as an awkward, misguided attempt at ultraviolent cool. If taken as intentional satire with humor as the primary goal, it's underwritten and not particularly clever.
