I read the readme and according to it, the demo does not work with Catalyst 3.8 drivers, but does work with 3.7 and 3.9 is recommended.
Well, I have 3.9 drivers, and I could run the demo-- at 640x480. As soon as I tried to change the resolution I got psychedelic-colored shapes that vaguely represented the menu items. My boyfriend had already played the demo-- using Catalyst 3.7 drivers, with no problem in changing resolutions-- so at least I knew how to get back to the "Exit to Desktop?" box, even if I couldn't see it.
Just wondering if anybody else with an ATI card had seen this problem, and/or whether it's fixable by any means other than going back to the 3.7 drivers (as I have done just so I can play the blasted thing and form my own opinion).

With a Radeon 9800 Pro the 3.9 drivers ran the demo almost perfectly for me. Multisampling combined with bloom produced that grey splotchy effect that many people noticed, but otherwise everything rendered without fault.

Yes - I got that too. It's related to multisampling. If you keep it at x1 the distortions disappear.

OK, so it's me, then. I also had massive display problems with the 3.7s (although that was also while using the demo tweaker, so I don't know where the fault lies).
So I'm downloading the demo again (maybe the installer got corrupted when I copied it over the network to my PC).
Very weird.

v3.9 + 9700 pro = just fine
Multisampling is FSAA when you increase it beyond 1.

9700 with 3.9s; no serious problems.
Bloom actually appears to break Multisampling while producing that weird corruption. Using either by themselves gave me no trouble.
