It's hard to say why exactly without ruining the books for people straight up, but you don't HAVE to have read them to understand what's going on. It's an entirely new story, completely standalone, but there'll be an extra layer of depth there for those who have gone through the whole series beforehand.

Hmm. I like the trailer. For what that's worth.

I know there's a few Dark tower fans around here, so I'll prattle on a bit.
After watching the trailer a bunch of times, I've come to the conclusion that this movie will be a big pile of shit. Maybe on it's own it'll be OK, but not as a Dark Tower movie that has anything to do with the books I love.
It kind of feels like the new Star Trek movies where JJ Abrahms gave himself ultimate license to rewrite the canon. The Dark Tower now has a new "cycle" where they can deviate from the books in any way they see fit. And they're deviating, a lot.
I know it's only a trailer, but I didn't see much of anything in there that resembles the 8 books I read over a period of 30 years or whatever it was. It looks like they're trying to turn it into a big action fest, with tons of shooting and slow motion dive rolls, and orcs. And barely a familiar scene from the books - I maybe saw one from book 3. Major characters missing. Very generic discussions about good and evil. Villains doing things they never did in the books. Kind of a mess actually.
I feel like I sound a bit like Fett in the Star Wars thread, a jilted ex-lover. I'm OK with that. There's been talk about making the books into a movie for years. And this is what we get?
We'll see, I guess I hope I'm proved wrong on August 4th.

I said the same thing, sort of, back in October (re. Star Trek). It is a reboot and not the same plot at all. The trailer confirms it. Yes, it may be a cool movie on its own, but it looks like the typical ADHD inspired dreg of a movie that has been the typical type forced down our collective throats for over a decade now. Action, action, action. I bet the script is no more than 20 pages. Not one shot will last more than 1.5 seconds. Move, move, move, then.... explosion with terrible canned expected sound effects that every movie uses. When it goes to Netflix 3 weeks after its release, then maybe I will give it a watch.

I'm suspicious too, Brethren. I'm willing to let it separate from the books a bit, because it being its own thing makes sense from canonical standpoint. But from the trailer, the acting seems stilted, the dialog comes off as a bit corny, and it just lacks the feel of the books.
I'll see how it reviews before I decide to go and see it in the theater.
