Let us wait for ZB muttering another insightful tad from above.

The try to get a copy of original Doom I today and laugh as much as you like.
Can't you pretty much get it free (and legal) from any number of places - or at least source-compatible versions and remakes / souped up versions / modernized versions, etc?
Admittedly I haven't googled it out or anything, but I thought the Doom I "world" was alive and kicking - just an impression (perhaps incorrect) formed from various web forum posts here and there, and the occasional link to some Doom I "fan site" with all kinds of Doom stuff freely available.
Is that incorrect?

According to (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom) Wikipedia, Doom was originally released as shareware. It's easy to find a downloadable version - getting it to run in a playable way on a modern PC may be another story, though (no I haven't tried).

Yea it was released as shareware first. It was a hot download from BBS's at the time. There was no internet at the time at least for the general public.
Fortunately I still have my copy of doom and doom2 although I haven't played them in ages. Buried somewhere in my stacks of cds/dvds I would imagine.
Yes before the internet there WAS something to do online. Play games on a BBS!

I started on BBS's in 1986 and stayed with them until the early 90's, when I found MUDs. I still admin on a MUD even to this day, although our active users now number in the single digits. I'll never forget the day a few years ago when one of my best friends, who happens to be an admin on (
http://www.fark.com/) Fark, posted a link to it as a news item and we got tens of thousands of hits to the website and hundreds of new characters created in a single day.

Back to topic: How's TDM coming? I'd like to check out the WIP editor if it's available.

You can still get the shareware version for free, and also the code. But I think that the assets were never been given for free. So if you would like to play the original Doom you would have to purchase a copy. If you just want to get the game and play some fanmaps with it, you could do it for free.

Of course you can get it from a lot of sources still, but the point is that you can't get an original copy just as easy.

Is there any reason why you would need an "original" copy? (what does that even mean?)
Are you saying that The Dark Mod will only work on full-price editions of Doom 3 and not on the budget re-release?
