Is there any reason that the dark mod would (not?) work with this Doom engine?
Question has been answered, but I'll elaborate a bit further..in case anyone has similar questions about the Prey, Quake 4 and new Quake Wars game engines. Yes, they are all Doom 3 based engines, but the code base has been changed significantly for each one. Dark Mod is coded to work 'within' the Doom 3 engine. It's possible that someone could port Dark Mod to use Quake 4, Quake Wars or Prey...but it would be a LOT of work, and whatever tricks they might wish to achieve by doing this...can pretty much all be done in the doom 3 engine. There is even a rough version of the Quake Wars 'Megatexture' technology working in D3 now.

Just out of curiosity - as I have yet to actually acquire a copy of Doom3 and am not willing to pay 30 bucks for a game I have no interest in past the Dark Mod. . .

If not Ill keep looking for a nice, cheap version. I have time, right? :) And by cheap. . .yes, I do mean like 10 bucks or less. lol
Yes you have time. Darkmod will not be completed for a while yet.
We are basically making a new game same as a software house would do but without all of the source code which they would have so it is actually harder to do :)
They take around 4 years roughly to do a game with full time dedicated people. Probably would be fair to say about the same time for us since we are providing a framework for FM authors and not developing a campaign at the same time as that will come later probably.

I have to say, from what pics I've seen here and there, it looks to be absolutely beautiful. It's a shame I don't have the free time I did years ago, or I'd get back into mapping. Last game I ever designed a map for was HexenII, and I just haven't had the time since . . . <sigh>
Real shame, as I've still got some brilliant ideas that would be amazing, I think, for the Dark Mod or for DS. In particular, there's a map I was wanting to do based off an old, old pen&paper RPG I ran years and years ago, from an old Ravenloft boxed set (it ran together perfectly, and if I could adapt that visually . . .). Ah, well . . . something to keep in mind, I guess, should I ever have enough time to spare.

There is no reason it would work with that engine. :)
I'm surprised Doom3 is still 30 bucks, but it'll probably be pretty low by the time of actual release. Of course it might be worth it to shell out the 30 bucks for Doom3, if you're an experienced FM author and want to start making Dark Mod FMs now as a beta mapper.
I thought not. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. :) And yeah, I thought that for Thief it might be worth it. . .but I'm *not* an experienced FM author. . .I"m only just learning Dromed and still figuring things out. I am an experienced player, though. Does that count? lol

On Amazon Doom 3 is already offered at 16 Euros, so i don't think that's expensive. And I'm sure you can find even better offers as well.
I'm not sure what Euros come out to in dollars, but on Amazon.ca the cheapest is 22.99, Futureshop.ca is 24.99. Unless I could find it in a place that has bargain bins. But I am not even sure where to look. I usually buy my stuff from Walmart as I see it, or order it online from one of these two places. I don't get into the city enough, with enough freedom that I could check out the places with baragain.
However, since there is time, I can wait, keep my eye out and by the time the Dark Mod's ready for me to play it. . .or even for me to learn to make missions in it, hopefully I'll have found a copy. But hey, you can't blame me for trying for a free way. lol

Gamespot has it (
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=644930) New for $20. If they had it used, it would probably be $12-15; you might want to serach the site occasionally to see if they get in any used copies. That's where I got my used copy (in the store, not from the website).

Yeah, I can do that. I can't go to the store. . .as I don't know if we have one here, but I can order. I'm also keeping an eye out for Thief Gold thats less than 40 bucks (new preferably) I didn't get it from Amazon when I should have and now they're asking ridiculous prices for used and 60+ for new?! For that, I'm willing to pay 30 or less for new and . . .a few bucks for used. lol I'm too picky. But money's tight.
So, yeah, I'll keep watching.
And the problem with getting it at Walmart, Thelvyn? While you can get great deals there if you watch it. . .you can't guarantee that because one store has it the next will. :P I've been watching the software in two different stores and their stock differs quite drastically in each place. I did see DiabloII there for a reasonable price. . .if that counts. :) Not that I need that.
So, yeah. I'll keep an eye peeled. Thanks!
