Seriously - with the DarkMod, we know EXACTLY what we are getting into. We have total control from the ground up. Well, relatively speaking - as opposed to T3, which we know has bugs, and who knows what cans of worms will open up when someone tries to do something "a little different".

I'm back from holiday now...boy, what a week, both away and here, it seems.
The changes to the Dark Mod will be subtle. You might see some more discussion as to plot, setting and characters earlier than you would have done otherwise. As for those who will still want to make fan missions for our platform, they can bear in mind all the advantages already pointed out.
I'm not going to go into depth about every little facet; but the truth is, this may have set us free a little. We're going to make more of what we want, whilst still offering all the right tools to the traditionalists. We're going to go over and above Thief 3 in terms of extra themes and settings. Because of null's announcement, I for one no longer feel responsible or answerable to the community. If you want to make maps with the same Garrett, with the same chraracters, feel and look of Thief 3, then you'll go to T3Ed.
BUT:
If you want something a little more customised, a little different, and a little more open in all liklihood (in terms of documentation, tweaks, Doom 3 editing community help and even audience), then you'll go with the Dark Mod.
Crazy stuff, eh? It's no competition.

I hereby resurrect this thread for important words need be said!
*magical conjuring sounds and crap*
Dark Mod team: I'd like to make a request for more of a peek into things. The site doesn't usually give us much, and that's quite understandable. However, the odd thing is that the forum is pretty sparse, with pretty much the same 22 posts forever. That it's been mentioned that discussion about TDM "should" go on there instead of here (which I don't necessarily agree with) kinda cools the heat with regard to the project a bit. A few times, I almost posted there something like, "where is the current forum?" because I've been almost sure it was going on somewhere else I didn't know about and I was missing out. I didn't, because I didn't want to sound like I was smart-assin', when I was actually quite sincere. I almost posted this there instead (for it would be more appropriate) but figured no one would see it. You guys probably have a hidden, private developer section of the forum set up, so as a result, you might not see the board (and thus the project itself) from the fans' perspective. Is there any way we could get a more intimate view of what's going on behind the scenes on a regular basis? I don't mean seeing everything you do of course, and I don't mean a webpage update once a week, but perhaps some kind of middle-ground, ongoing discussion type of environment? We might even prove useful with the occasional crazy idea or suggestion (a topic which hasn't seemed to start yet). Put it this way - it WOW'd me to read (from the site) that you guys have a frob system working now. That has me drooling wondering what else you might have accomplished so far. I also saw a very cool water screenshot, and I can't remember where.
Anyway - if it's too much, it's completely understandable and don't sweat it; 'twas but a question from an interested onlooker, nothing more.

I forwarded that to our dev forum. Don't want to say to much as we agreed to not posting to much everybody on his own.

That's only because the public can't see our private dev forums. We have made over 5000 posts there which you can't read right now.
Are you saying you'd like to be able to read our dev forums? The forum is (
www.modetwo.net/darkmod) (kindly provided by Modetwo).
Anyway, rest assured that there IS progress being made, and as soon as there's a significant amount to be shown, we'll release a demo flyby, or something of the kind. At the moment our biggest struggle is finishing a model and getting it ingame. Our modellers have mostly taken 'holidays' which is fine, but when they do it all at once, it leaves us kind of undermanned in the 3D dept.

I posted in the Dark Mod forums but still - are you guys going to share the frob info with the Sapphire Scar team? Dark Engine mods and all that.
S_Hole on 16/11/2004 at 17:57
btw
apparently they're releasing splinter cell mod tools soon aswell
it already has the stealth element in.. but is all 3rd person (probably pretty easy to mod to 1st person though)

Well, it looks like people are ready for a small taste of what goes on behind the darkened doors of The Dark Mod forums.
There has been a lot of really great work coming together and I'm pleased to share a sample with you. It's a small sample, but it also shows the promise of things to come.
SneaksieDave, you had better have a drool rag handy. ;)

http://www.timgormley.ca/classicfrob.jpg Keep in mind this is still very early in development and things won't work exactly how they're supposed to just yet.
The frob system is handled by Doom3 scripting, which is a very lovely thing. Doom3 scripting determining the Frobbing system "opens the door" ;) to a world of possibilties. A fan mission author could script a series of actions that would unfold upon frobbing an item. You could frob a book and all the doors close in a room trapping the player, alarms could go off, things could blow up. It's really up to the author. :)
