Is there anything in the BFG edition that can be backported into TDM? Or better yet, is there anything worth backporting?

Wow that happened a lot sooner than I was expecting!
Levels load a lot faster in the BFG version. That's probably the biggest thing that'd be good for TDM to get, since the levels do take a while to load. There's a higher FPS cap and some level-of-detail stuff, things that could improve performance.
That's just what I recall. Somebody that knows what they're doing needs to dig through it to see what we might scavenge.

Here is what Serpentine wrote (

The more I casually browse through it, the less interesting much of it seems. There's some stuff which will be worthwhile to pilfer, but for the most part it seems a bit alien and out of place for the old engine. Even things like dmap seem to be completely missing - while I guess I might just be missing something and it could have been renamed, I'm just not so sure there's much worthwhile stuff here. Overall, streamlined for a single platform commercial release, but not much more.
The shader release is quite nice, havent looked at the render too closely but perhaps we can at least try get their glsl render working, otherwise maybe mix something up with Dante.
Doesn't look like it is much.

Is the stereoscopic 3D stuff in there? I looked at the list of stuff not included, and I didn't see a mention of it.

maybe. Darkmod community doesn't care it at all imo. I mean how many of us will buy that headset? Will it worth that much effort? I don't think so.
The 3D stereoscopic options in BFG are not only for the headset but for pretty much any current 3D setup. And rather than guessing that the Dark Mod community has no interest in it, you could go read the Dark Mod forums right now and see that some do :) Granted it's a niche thing and I'm not claiming otherwise, but don't assume that no one's interested in it just because you're not.

Sparhawk, one of the old original coders for TDM, visits the forums on occasion. He's a HUGE 3D buff.
Just before Doom 3 went GPL he speculated on making a D3D version of the renderer so that it would
be easier to use native 3D solutions for Windows. There was a little controversy over the topic because
it would be a Windows-Only perk and many TDM players are Linux users...

Doom3 is on sale on Steam today/tomorrow for $3.24 USD.
If you ever wanted to pick it up, it's about as cheap as games on Steam get.

Bumping the thread to let people know about our standalone progress.
We're currently working on getting TDM to the point where it is completely independent of Doom3. This means you could download TDM directly from our servers, for free, and just start playing.
There are a lot of assets yet to be replaced (sounds and particles especially), but we're getting there. It's now possible to play 12 different missions with standalone TDM and not notice any missing assets. Four of those missions have had every asset replaced (the other eight are missing one or two minor assets).
If you're curious, you can follow our progress here: (
http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Missing_assets_by_map)
Also, for more details and a few screenshots of new assets, check out our webpage: (
http://www.thedarkmod.com/)
Our hope is to have a standalone version of TDM ready by the fall.

It probably goes without saying, but if anyone has some decent recording equipment and wants to make some sound foleys, or wants to try their hand at making things like particles, textures, or decals, it could sure help the process. They'd have to be quality checked to be used, but if you're interested anyway, we have a forum for volunteers here: (
http://forums.thedarkmod.com/forum/11-i-want-to-help/)
Of course people can also contribute normal fan things like fan art, fanfics, and above all FMs, as always.
