That sounds like a fantastic new gameplay element. It's a difficult, manual process to make it happen in Dark so it's great that you guys have it built into TDM now.

Glenham Tower had this fantastic atmosphere about it. I put it on the same level as Return to the Cathedral from T1. That is one of my all-time favorite Thief missions, along with Sword and Song of the Caverns. Hopefully we will see an opera house in TDM some day!

I'm wondering if a convention will spring up to have guards relight only in the 2 harder difficulties.
Springheel on 26/6/2011 at 18:55
That's how I'm doing it my upcoming mission. Most lights are not set to "should be on" at the easiest difficulty.

And it doesn't have to be all through a mission. It can be a single particular light for a particular story reason, or to give a single character an idiosyncrasy, and not necessarily have to do with difficulty or challenge. Approaching the mechanic from a variety of angles can enhance play and personality and break up predictability. :D

Even when they don't relight them, the barks can still add a lot of atmosphere. I had a cool "emergent moment" where I put out a candle near some guards who were playing dice. The way the barks came out one after the other, it sounded like they were talking to each other:
Guard 1 "That went out awfully quick."
Guard 2 "Well, if they'd spend more money on them maybe they'd last longer."
Guard 3 "I'd relight it if they just got some new ones."

The majority of AI can relight lights. By default they have a high chance to notice lights out, a high chance of relighting switch lights and a low chance of relighting flames (has to be somewhere they can reach). Mappers can adjust these as desired.
AI can notice and comment on any light that is extinguished, but only lights that a mapper sets as "should be on" will be relit. Mappers also determine whether the light should be treated as suspicious if found extinguished. Most maps haven't used this feature yet, so AI will only comment on lights in currently existing maps.
Thanks for the clarification! I thought as much. I love how it balances it further by making the player think (or rather, plan) twice before extinguishing lights, while at the same time providing an opportunity for players to set "light traps" for guards. I love TDM. :cheeky:

July 4th - 2011 - Doom3 $5 on Steam
only $5, if you've been waiting to get it on the cheap...
This allows you to play TheDarkMod, keep in mind you have to be online while running it through Steam

It's a definitely great news :). If I was a TDM member, I'd change the frontpage of the site from this:

THE DARK MOD is a total conversion for Doom 3
to this:

Yes, it looks like an advertise, but, I think, people should know this.
