Well, if you think the TDM models are terrible, you're more than welcome to submit some of your own. TDM isn't a corporate project, where the only goal is to take the user's money and leave them with an unfixable, binary product.
Anyone can contribute to make TDM better. If you truely believe that Thief IV won't continue the legacy of T1/2 when it comes to FMs and fan-works in general, why not start contributing to TDM? This project will also get better as it ages: better textures, more assets, higher performance, less bugs, and so on. We're already seeing this happen with 1.04 and the recent FMs.

The TDM models definitely have a distinct style and art direction. They won't suit everybody's taste, but they're very well done in an objective sense. (Though we could use some improved animations to show them off better, I think.) But there's nothing wrong with saying you'd like to see some alternative art styles featured in the game. As a practical matter though, like lost_soul was saying, it comes down to a dedicated fan actually putting in the effort to create them. You could do it if you like, or try to recruit someone that shares your vision.
There were some things that I wanted to improve that I actually did just on my own initiative, just as a fan, and some of them ended up being good enough that the Dark Mod team decided to incorporate them into the mod (after a lot of internal discussion) -- the ambient sound system and a new Stealth Score. Other "improvements" I've worked on I know will never get incorporated because they don't fit, but I wasn't doing them for that reason anyway, just for me. So believe us when we say, if there's something you want to see, don't be afraid to jump in and make it. If you say "But I don't know modeling", well, this is a good opportunity to learn. I didn't really know coding either, but I learned enough to make the improvements I wanted to see and did it anyway (and actually for the ambient sound system, there was even some resistance at first; some people didn't believe it could be done easily like I wanted and tried to dissuade me from a wild goose chase ... until I did it, lol, then it became an awesome idea and they helped me make it even better).
Some custom content is so good the team will want to talk about incorporating it. But even if a contribution doesn't fit into the mod (you want a consistent art direction, so even very good models might not fit), but if you do a good job, others will probably like them too and start putting them in FMs as custom content. TDM is very friendly to custom content, so new artistic styles can always be tried & experimented with in FMs, and honestly it's good when some FMs try new styles, just for some variation.

I have the same issue with thief deadly shadows ,which I think has better gameplay than TDM but I still think it's a terrible game.

do you think that third-person view better than first-person and climbing gloves better than classic rope arrows ? or you like loading zones ?
TDS wasn't
so terrible but there lot of reasons why fans dislike it
Just play TDM before critique, maybe you change your mind

If you preferred the gameplay of TDS and would like unrealistic models that look like they're from a medieval painting, then yes, TDM may not be the game for you.

I know this is a strange question but is it possible to play a TDM without owning TDS?
Springheel on 9/3/2011 at 20:56
TDM has nothing to do with TDS. You only need Doom3 to play it.

Really? that's a complaint?
I actually take it as a compliment.
obviously you're not too in tune with Thief's style. Sure, T1/2 were pretty low poly, but they were realistic.
(apart from items being magical, etc...)
But physically/looks wise it was a very realistic game.
Now TDS was a bit 'cartoony'. Bulging eyeballs, even comical proportions on some objects imo, etc...
But that's definitely not the direction we were going in.
Some games DO need comical proportions. I love TF2 and they did a great mix of realism/impressionism/comical without being overly cartoony. But that never fit Thief or TDM imo and while T3 did have good graphics, I felt the weird proportions detracted from the game.

Yeah putting aside artistic taste, overly-stylized or cartoonish doesn't fit in the game. I think for both Thief and Dark Mod, a lot of the appeal is voyeuristic. You're breaking in to other people's houses and warehouses and seeing their dirty laundry. It's gritty and realist. Even the "fantasy" parts aren't really fantastic. Magic is just one more natural part of the world people use or misuse to their advantage, so I think even particle effects for magic events should be somewhat realistic and not cartoonish bubbleplosions.

How do I set TDM to autorun mode? The walking mode is too slow for me, and it's annoying to always have to press the shift key.
